Differences in boiler for Myford Boys TE
« on: May 05, 2026, 01:42:26 AM »
:help:   To all, What a wonderful grouping you all are. I have a question that revolves around the Myford Boys traction engine model. I recently purchased a set of (6 pces) , and they are truly beautiful in terms of castings for that what appears to be a relatively easy construct and pleasing to the eye model. However, and here lies the rub. There were 40 individual pages that outlined each piece of the build. They reflect a simple ceramic meths type burner suspended beneath the boiler shell incorporating a central stay rod passing directly through the center of the end caps. Fair enough. However, upon research, You Tube has a series outlining the build stages and it is showing a flue passing through the end caps lower off center and is heated by a pressure burner. I like that idea better and would very much like to know if anyone on this forum has some more information on this set up they could supply to me that outlines in better detail this setup. ei: location of this said flue and its diameter. Also any related information of the fuel tank and its burner.    Any accurate information towards this subject would be very much appreciated. Everyone please be safe and have fun.

Have you asked him on Youtube or his website?

He also frequents Model Engineer forum under the name of "Engine Builder"

Hi,

I didn’t build his model…. But I did build a 3/4” from parts and self build and a self built boiler burner!

I can say this much generally, The multi tube design I’d change to two larger tubes for meths and one big one for gas with some very small cross water tubes mainly to slow the heat/gas down…

Meths worked best in the end because I had to fiddle a lot with the gas flow to get everything running well but then it wasn’t enough heat !

Essentially it was difficult to get enough energy into a small boiler on its side

I like his gas pencil torch approach in one video I saw but the commercially available gas equipment at this scale is expensive

There are some burners on eBay imported that are good and cheap that may get you started !

Good luck !
