Posting Images inline with the text
« on: April 18, 2026, 11:45:54 PM »
Since I have returned I was told that images stored on Imgur and included in line with the text could not be seen by UK users, consequently the images had to be also included as attachments. Which I have been doing. However, I wondered why it was even necessary to store images outside of the forum when copies were available inside the forum. Why couldn't they be used inline with the text. It appears they can.

Upload the image(s) to the attachments link at the bottom and post the reply

Copy the link to the image (right click the image file name)

Paste the link in the text

https://www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=12849.0;attach=184177

add the Image tags

Save the result

A bit of a faff maybe but a way of getting images in line with the text. Maybe the admins can expand on this, is there an alternative?

Yes that works but it is a hell of a faff as you say. I'm no expert but I guess doing it that way also puts more load on the MEM server as the full size image has to be pulled (until cached) rather than a thumbnail each time the thread is read.

You could always use postimages.org instead of Imgur which AFAIK has no restrictions but like all third party hosting, you're at their mercy (it's sad to see all those sites with missing images after photobucket imposed restrictions).

More likely to get problems with the "Free" third party hosting sites, my Photobucket images from right back to 2004 all still show. I do have to pay for that but with almost 8000 images would have had to do that anyway as most free sites set limits. It also serves as an extra backup should my other methods ever fail. The free Postimages option is also restricted compared to a paid one.

I have used a similar method to Pete where I have posted images to one site and use the URL to post to another site as I often just copy and paste my post.

I would not say the method is that much of a faff when compared with first having to upload to a hosting site (same as loading attachments) then copying the link and putting into the post which is what needs to be done either way. It does make it a lot easier to follow a thread particularly when there are multiple photos and text related to each.

I was with Photobucket and when that started charging I moved everything to Imgur and went through all my posts and changed the links to the new Imgur locations. I don't really think I am prepared to do that again. I may update the seal post to use the local images as that should be fairly painless as I have already been including the images as attachments.

I can't see that there would be any noticeable extra load on the site. I use FastStone photo resizer to reduce the size of the images, which results in something like a 80% reduction in size. (I didn't do that with the image I used as an example here) What I don't understand is why the site doesn't provide a direct method of doing this. If space is a problem it could do the resizing on the fly

Yes aware of that.

The discussion is about the source of the image between the tags, particularly when free hosting sites change their service offering like Photobucket charging  and Imgur  deciding not to comply with the UK rules so not allowing UK users to see their hosted images. I suggested a method where attached images, on MEM, could be embedded in the text, but see that is what you have done. ( I have added '.' to your tags so the image doesn't display so the others can see what is intended.)

Update - I have just made a post with an embedded image the UI I have doesn't have the Mona Lisa icon, it is something else. When you did your reply did you first upload the picture and then link it into your reply or does clicking the Mona Lisa icon allow you upload and embed the image in one action?
