I have a plan sheet for the auxiliary  engines from the Great Eastern. On those, they had one large double acting water pump at the end, and two more smaller feedwater pumps near the column, very similar to the  picture Michael posted. The cylinder and crank were up above the beam, and the large pump was where the cylinder  usually  was. They also had a power take off shaft from the crank that drove deck winches. I'll be  posting pics later this summer of the CAD version. There were lots of arrangements for  beam pumping engines!

Presume that this small pump is intended for the boiler feedwater for the engine, rather than as a pump that the engine powers for general pumping purposes?   Certainly the little pump involves a lot of careful work on a quantity of components. Dave

Yes, judging from the size and the discussion on this thread it is a boiler feed pump. There are so many really fiddly bits for such a small pump, it'll be great to see it pumping even if it will never get used in anger .....

All the pump bits are made and my goodness when they are assembled we have a working pump! 

Last bits are the connection to the beam, then pump mounting to the bedplate

Nice work with the pump!

I made this little feed pump because the bronze casting was included in the kit; this pump works fine.
I just did it for the fun of machining it. I have to say it's completely useless: the pump's outlet isn't connected to a boiler, but simply redirected back into the tank! 
Actually, I couldn't find a boiler design from that era that matched the "Vulcan" model and appealed to me for making a complete steam plant.

The pump design looks great, if fiddly, but I have the same thought, not sure how efficient it'll be; mine is there purely for completeness and show! Good to see it actual functioning though .....

That works nicely (but in the opposite way to what I was expecting ie outlet on the upstroke, silly me!).

Project Vulcan is now finished 

The engine looks a bit different from when I just got it stripped, rebuilt and it was just about running

- The new base and outrigger are finished with fillets to make them look like castings
- The cylinder has wooden lagging
- The newly made pump is now fixed to the beam and base and is operational
- There is a globe valve fitted its own little stand
- New pipework for the inlet has been installed (not the easiest place to get to!)
- The engine is now running nicely after having gland packing and gaskets installed throughout
- The whole kit and kaboodle has been planted onto a wooden board with some oak flooring

oh, and in case you didn't notice it's been painted minty green

Congratulations on this beautiful Vulcan. The color scheme turned out very fresh and striking. I also like the wooden base.

The engine looks very nice, and the running is excellent ,at the suitable realistic beam engine sort of speed of rotation.  This has been a well worthwhile project, and has added an interesting classic model to your collection.  And has given another model that was in need of TLC a secured future for the years ahead.
