Windows explorer
« on: April 02, 2026, 01:18:55 AM »
Before Windows 10 updated to 11 I could access my other two computers over my network. After the update,(it's been a couple of years at least), An image appears on screen, Asking for a password. It doesn't ask to set up a password just ask for a password. I thought maybe entering a password would create one but it did not. I have searched the Internet and all I get is setting up a password to lock the computer. I don't mind setting up a password if I can just figure out how to do it For Windows Explorer.

Windows networking has always been a bit dodgy, but with Windows 11, it has become even more touchy.

The best plan is to make sure that each computer has a logon password. It can be dirt-simple, such as a single character, but it is important to have something.

That is the password that is needed for your network connection.

I did try my network password and that didn't work either.

It is the login Name and Password to Enter Windows after startup.
If your PC just boots into the Desktop without ANY questions - you are missing the necessary credentials ....

An easy way out of this problem is to enter the User Administration - right click on the Windows logo in the bottom and select Computer-Administration.
In the left pane - click on "Local users and groups" - then click on Users.
Now left click in an empty part of the middle pane and click on "New user".
In the new window - type a Username - could be "NewAdmin" and give it a Password and remove the tick next to 'User must change password on next logon' (I'm NOT on an English system).

Next right click on the new user, click on "Properties". Now click on the "Member of" Pane. Down in the bottom, click on [Add].
In the new window - click on [Advanced] - middle right - click on [Search now].
Double click on Administrators in the 'Search result' below.
Click on [OK] and the window closes.
You are now back in the Properties window and Administrators are on top of the list  :)
Click [OK] and close the first window too.

MAKE SURE that you don't have other programs running and then hit [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [Del] - select log off and logon as the newly added Administrator.

You can now solve your problems using the new Account.

When finished and it all works - login with the Account that hasn't got a password and Disable the NewAdmin account (another Tick under the one you removed earlier).

Hope this is useful + if you don't feel confident doing the above - Get HELP  ;)

Best wishes

I hope this creates a password only when using Windows Explorer.

There is no password for Explorer it self in any wich way - no matter if it's "File Explorer" or "browser Explorer" ...!

My previous description was how to make a User that needs a password to access Windows - just in case you don't need to login to your Windows 10 machines (I haven't found a way to enter a Windows 11, without login).

Goggle "how to connect two pc to each other" and you will get help.

Traps are for instance that the individual PC's try to access Networks with different names - I ALWAYS uses a special name for my Network and therefor has to type that name into the network Settings on all the Units on my network (including Routers, PC's, Printers etc.

Windows Default Network Name has changed a few times over the years - so Check that they ALL share the same name as the Network Name on the Router ...!

That said - I don't think that is your problem - As you are asked about the Login credentials of the Computer in the other end by "File Explorer .... It's NOT the credentials of the PC you are sitting in front of  ;)

Automatic login works the same on Windows 11 as it does on Windows 10.

I have three computers on my local private network (just an ordinary router), and all three can talk to each other without issue. I have one Windows 10 (Pro), one Windows 11 (Pro), and one Windows 11 (Home).

I do not need to manually log in on any of them. That process is the same as it has been for many years. I do not remember the exact details, but I believe there is something buried in the settings that allows automatic logon. No doubt that Google will know the exact answer.

I have an identical username and password on each computer. The password is very, very simple. I never need to actually type it in unless I do a "switch user" or something like that.

There is a technique to allow networking with no passwords at all, but it requires setting Group Policies. I have found it to be a bit unreliable, so I went with the simple password approach.

Well I finally got it sorted out. :cartwheel:  I wanna thank everyone for their suggestions and with a little help from google got me lookin in the right place. Both  my computers can talk to each other now with Windows Explorer.
All I had to do was turn password protected Sharing off.

I don't remember ever turning that on so evidently when Windows updated to 11 that was a default setting.
