Engines > Restoration of Model Engines
A Stuart D 10 ist being renovated.
Michael S.:
Hello everyone,
I've noticed that the "Engine Restoration" section here has been used almost exclusively by Sanjay lately. I now also have an engine that needs some TLC. (Sanjay is partly to blame for this 😇)
A Stuart D10 needs to run again. It looks like the engine was supposed to get a new crankshaft at some point, but the project failed. The crankshaft won't turn. So, I'm taking the engine apart.
Michael S.:
At first glance, it looked like the cylinder block was made from a single piece. However, it's actually constructed as two cylinders joined together with some kind of filler.
A small corner is broken off the stand. One of the slide valves has a beveled edge. Does the crankshaft have ball bearings positioned in front of the main bearing?
I think there's quite a bit of work to be done here.
Michael
Jasonb:
Bearings are an addition and will probably get in the way of the eccentrics.
Michael S.:
These two ball bearings are really supposed to hold the crankshaft. As Jason already noticed, the eccentric discs are actually rotating at this point. Why the original builder of the engine did it this way is anyone's guess. The crankshaft has a diameter of 1/4 inch. I'll have to make new bearings. The broken corner on the stand has been soldered back on with silver solder. I machined the holes a bit to create a flat surface. The parts for reverse gear are also available.
Charles Lamont:
That has cleaned up well. Good job with the foot repair. It looks as though more remedial work will be needed here and there.
