Hi All,
well it has been some years since I started a thread on this site and that one took years to complete. I'll try to complete this one much quicker.
The part engine you see in the photo is a very early stuart h10, similar to the one restored by Sanjay in the last restoration thread on this site, so two together one after the other.
As you will see the engine is missing the valve chest, the valve rod and valve with a few other small parts to make, otherwise ok, bearings are good, very little play and for other parts machining standards have been good. The eccentric strap was broke and needed a new rod grafting on.
I decided to start this engine from the base upwards and as the engine has no box plate that's where we begin.
I have some photos of early h10 engines so was able to put together some plans and then fabricate the box. the assembly is simple, a flat mild steel base with a chamfered alloy top bonded and screwed. the top has two side inserts for the forward mounting points on the sole plate and two mild steel inserts at front and rear of the box.
The biggest problem I had making the box was devising a way to hold the alloy block to machine chamfer the sides. I eventually gave up, clamped the block in the bench vice, got myself a "BIG BASTARD" from the file rack and proceeded to hand file it, finishing of draw filing with a large smooth file, whilst checking for straightness with a steel rule. It took around 20 minutes to do each side and on completion I was really warm on a very cold day.
More to come Jeff
