Oh ....... I can always put it back in the chuck and remove a couple of thou of the solder; presumably the solder is quite abrasive hence removing it?

Not really, more a case of getting a smooth surface to run against the bearing and there is a chance that the web was not perfectly true to the shaft when soldered.

I don't want to mess this up at the last minute, what is the best way of holding this in order to mill the radius? I have tried chuck in the rotary table but it was jiggling around too much, maybe I should use the chuck in the 2nd pic to lessen the vibration or should I somehow clamp the piece directly to the table?

Should I mount the RT vertically and mill that way ......tbh I don't know :facepalm2:

If you want to mill it then hold say a piece of 1/2" bar vertically in the chuck on your rotary table, long enough that the cankshaft clears the chuck, tap the end 5BA and then screw the web to that.

I was thinking about buttons but ......

How do I hold the filing button(s) as its the shaft which is behind it. I guess I could make a button with a small thread and tap a hole of the equivalent size in the web?

For the larger diameter around the shaft. Just take a piece of 1/2" bar about 1/2" long and ream a 1/4" hole through it. Slip onto the shaft then hold the shaft in your bench vice. You will effectively have a one sided single button so just keep most of your file in contact with that.

I'm not really sure why you got the jiggling as I use the rotary table all the time to round over just that type of thing. Hold so you have about 1-2mm clearance between web and the chuck jaws then come in at it from the side at full depth making ever decreasing diameter cuts of 10thou depth rather than down from the top

That's interesting I was coming down rather than from the side which may be the issue; I've always struggled with rounding these type of components using a RT so maybe that's the reason.

Steady progress today, made the crank pin and the eccentric and I'm using 7BA grubs instead of making the set screws as suggested

Made a start on the cylinder today, the bore is 0.625" and the lenghth 1.625"; next will be mark out, then machine the ports and steam pasages
