Simple stud inserter/remover tools

I got tired of trying to insert small 7BA studs in tight spaces, so decided to make a couple of simple tools.

This is the inserter tool.



The outer barrel is threaded 7BA at the tip, and some coarser thread at the other end (3BA maybe? I forget). There's an internal spindle with a tip that's a slip fit inside the 7BA thread (ignore the thread remains in the photo; brain fart on my part).



Thread the stud into the end of the barrel, tighten down the spindle that just pushes against the end, and then you can get the stud into some tight spaces:



Unscrew the spindle to release the tool from the stud.

That's great for screwing in studs, but what about removing them? For that I made another similar tool:



This works on the jamb nut principle. There's a barrel which is drilled out most of the way down to be a slip fit for the inner part, but with a bit of 7BA thread at the end, and a square-ended hole where the spindle lands. The inner part is drilled and tapped 7BA at the end, long enough to receive the threaded part of a stud. Together they act as a pair of jamb nuts.



I guess you could use the jamb nut tool for insertion too.

The two together. I won't be getting any prizes for my knurling  :-[
