Scrap Wobbler
« on: May 27, 2026, 04:16:57 pm »
While contemplating a couple of other simple engines I decided to use up some scrap to make a single acting oscillator. I didn't do a build log because a) it's too trivial to interest anyone here and b) it was quite ugly and probably shouldn't be described as engineering  :lolb:

All of the components except the massively oversized flywheel are from previous cock-ups, most having been sawn off other bits and almost all having plugged or re-bored holes (I think there were 7 in the cylinder  :o) I've yet to make a stand and will probably have to make a sensible flywheel but here is my dangling wobbler (or wobbly dangler)  It runs on next to nothing and is unnervingly quiet (no doubt the dangling helps in that regard though)!

Designing around, and making an engine from, scrap parts is surprisingly time consuming and tedious, I probably won't do it again

Nice!
I don't think I've ever seen an engine dangling on a string like that, a new trend?    Does that make it an aero engine?

I like it - I reckon if that spun fast enough it would definitely induce a gyroscopic effect especially being suspended on a string; apologies I'm a bit of a gyro geek  ;D
Best regards

If it took off flying, it would be a gyro-copter?

Just imagine a tree full of these, that would be quite lively!

This one is finished. The base is black and the engine is just primed (as usual) because that's all the paint I've got and it's was all about using scrap/leftovers. I also did a bit of free-wheeling on the fly-wheeling for no reason other than practice.

Fabulous, looks like a piece of modern art; the cubist engine!👍😁
Best regards
