That was a quick recovery, Chris!
Though I'm sure it was still pretty head-smacking when you first realized it.  They always are.

Is that what they mean by additive machining? Oh hell, I've been doing that for years.

And finishing up the bearing block shaping for the Bucyrus. After notching in for the rear flange, the sides were angled in, with the two blocks clamped together in the vise:

The vertical plates that connect to the bulkhead were also notched at the top to final shape, and everything assembled:

A good looking row of engines!

Next I'll make the top plates for the Marion and Bucyrus engines. These plates sit on top of the crosshead guides, extending between the bulkheads, and will have pivot blocks added for all the levers. The Erie engine has the valve rod pivots held by tubes in the side rails, and the Thew engine has the valve rods down on pivots held by the base plate.

Hmmm, a version of Scrabble with extra points for puns?

This afternoon I trimmed the length/width of the top plates, and laid out the recesses needed to get them to fit down over the crosshead guides. Got the Bucyrus plate milled with a ball end mill, following the traced lines. These recesses do not need to be smoothly fit since the edges will not be seen, so I didn't take finely spaced cuts, just one every .050". Just the outer end cut will be seen where it sits down on the side of the guide tube.

After a few tweak cuts, the plate fit on quite well:

To keep from having any screw heads showing, I will make a vertical column or two to go from the middle of the plate down to the base plate between the crosshead guides to hold it in place and keep it removeable as needed for future work. There will be a number of pivot rod blocks set in the top of the plate for the valve and throttle rods.

Next time I'll start simaler shaping on the Marion top plate. It has more shape to it, wider at the crankshaft end over the side boxes, but pretty much the same shaping needed to fit over the guide tubes.
