William Stubbs 1889 boxer engine .......maybe not!

(1/2) > >>

Sanjay F:
Here's an interesting engine I've been messing around with; I'm not sure what the configuration of the cylinders and motion is called but it reminds me of a boxer engine except boxer engines punch at the same time in opposite directions. With this engine the boxers both punch at the same time but in the same direction; with one boxer punching and the other pulling his punches!  :D

Only the bottom piston is connected to the crank with the other connected via the square frame. When the top cylinder goes over TDC the very top port opens whilst simultaneously in the bottom cylinder the very bottom port opens - so one pushing and one pulling?

So maybe its a vertical twin cylinder 'push 'n' pull' engine?

I added the pipework for the inlets, new gaskets and packing and equally spaced out the port openings; given its age its never going to run like Swiss watch (or Chris' magnificent mini tower clock), but I've been sat here in the workshop hypnotised by the motion ..........

Very interesting  engine!  Where do you find all these old models?!

Michael S.:
A really interesting engine.

Now that I see the pictures, from all sides, I'm wondering why only the upper cylinder has a valve in the steam pipe? And only the upper cylinder has an oiler? Okay, the oil reservoirs must be mounted differently on the lower cylinder.

Are the cylinders the same size? No compound?

But it runs very well.

Sanjay F:
I did have the same thought if it was a compound due to the valve on the top inlet, but both cylinders are the same size and the pipework would be 'interesting' to take it from the exhaust of the top cylinder to the inlet of the other. The little oiler on the top came with a box of other bits and pieces which had nothing to do with this engine, but oiler looked right and fitted, so there its going to live for evermore!

I did also notice that the bottom cylinder has a few remaining pieces of wooden lagging on it, but I think for this engine the naked cylinders look quite good

Not a compound, both cylinders same size, steam inlet only goes to the steam chests, and both exhaust ports are open to the outside.
