Thank you for having me on this forum.  I was having issues trying to get my account verified so I could log on and a few fine people on this site helped make it happen and I greatly appreciate it.  I am very new to to this hobby and starting all of this late in life...I'll be 62 in a few weeks.  I still have not yet purchased a lathe and mill...Hopefully very soon.  I have been reading and watching videos as much as I can and hope to learn as much as I can from you all.  Thanks again and if anyone has any questions for me please ask away.

Bob

Welcome Bob, great to have you here.
The biggest problem I have had with model engines is that I really want to build all of them, and so I have had to force myself to focus on one at a time.

Do you have some builds in mind ?

What sort of lathe and mill are you looking to acquire ?
Opinions vary widely on lathes and mills.
For me it is the least expensive item that will work adquately, since my funding gets spread across machining and foundry items.

Thanks Pat.  No specific builds in mind but will likely start out small and ease my way into it.  For machines I'm looking at the PM-1130V lathe and the PM-728VT Mill.  I think they will do what I need and will just fit in my garage.
Thanks!!!

Hi Bob,
Welcome to the forum!
Kim

Thank you Kim!  I have just started reading on your build of the Pennsylvania A3 Switcher.  I would love to build something like that one day.  I have purchased a number of Kozo Hiraoka's books but not that one.  Too expensive right now, probably too expensive ever.  I talked with the Village Press and they said if enough people show interest in that book they may do another printing of it.  All anyone has to do is just send them a quick email letting them know you are interested.  If enough people do this then they may reprint.  I know...a longshot but I would love to have that book at a more reasonable price.

I thought he was doing another run of the A3 switcher book.  Maybe not though... They sure seem to be going for a LOT of money right now!  Whew!  I don't think I'd have done that project either if it was that expensive when I was looking several years ago! Yowza!  :o  I may have to sell my copy to pay for my retirement!

I hope he does another printing. It is a project and a GREAT book!

They were/are planning another run, but it got delayed. Kozo's books are expensive and time consuming to print, with the fold out pages here and there and the hardcover bindings, which they have to send out to another company to do. I don't know when they will reprint it, but the more people email them and ask for it the more likely it will be. They did reprint the New Shay book last year.

Many folks, myself included, began their engine modeling career building designs by Elmer Verburg.  His book, Elmer's Engines is out of print and used copies are very expensive.  Fortunately, you can download a free pdf of the book here...

All his engines' designs are made from bar stock; no castings.  Machining castings is trickier than building from bar stock so his designs are a great way to develop your skills with minimum disappointment.

Welcome to the forum.  You'll find the folks here easy going, talented and eager to help.

What Marv said! Perfect place to start to learn the concepts/techniques.
