Straight 6 IC or CI drawings, anyone?
springcrocus:
One of my next projects is a 5" gauge B.R Class "08" diesel shunter and i would like to try and power it with an IC engine or a diesel engine (though doubting my ability to make the latter successfully) in the 30cc to 50cc range but am struggling to find any published designs. I don't have the ability, or inclination, to try and design my own and I really don't fancy battery-powered.
Wilf and I were discussing this in the clubhouse yesterday and he suggested something from the Hemingway website but the closest I could find was a 4-cylinder Seal Major and I then found Jo's build log and read through that. Wilf also suggested turning one into a 6-cylinder by extending the block and redesigning the crankshaft and camshaft but, again, a bit daunting. I wouldn't be using any castings, just barstock.
I suppose 1 could build a 4-cylinder engine then add a dummy section to one end but can anyone suggest anything a bit more like the prototype? The original was an English Electric 6KT inline 6-cylinder 350 hp diesel. Any suggestions gratefully received.

There is a set of castings for a straight 6 IC engine sitting in Guildford with Muddled Engineer. I am racking my brain to remember what it is for :wallbang: :old:

Having looked up the engine it looks quite devoid of features on the outside so could quite easily be done with barstock and a bit of milling of the sides would add the rectangular panels which could be dummies. Then you can put whatever mechanicals you want inside the skin.
Schillings has several straight six designs as well as V 12 so pick something from there and adapt to suit your needs. See the recent BMW thread here for a straight six

In model engine builder magazine vol 1 & 2 their are plans for Randal Cox’s 6 Cylinder In-line/Open Crankcase Engine
Bore 1" Stroke 1.5"
It might give you some ideas

Westbury's Wallaby engine (a 30cc 2 cylinder twin) was desiged to power a 3-1/2" gauge model of the LMS experimental diesel shunter no 1831. Casting etc from Hemingway Reeves. Perhaps take the basics of the design and extend it to a barstock 3-cylinder to give more power and make it sound more like a 6?
