PM Research no.5 .......have a Coke (bottle)!

(1/30) > >>

Sanjay F:
Onto the next new build and this time I'm going for a PM Research no.5 'Coke bottle' engine. My initial thoughts of getting a good deal, under £50 delivered soon disappeared when I realised the devil is in the detail and I have none of the UNC/UNF taps and dies so had to send off for them.

Looks like these castings have been untouched since being purchased in 2003 and were delivered to Texas, then to the UK and then to me 22 years later.

I've always liked the look and style of this type of engine and have seen a few builds documented on the MEM wesbite. I must admit the weight, or lack thereof, of the castings is very strange to me as I'm used to cast iron not Ali. I guess lots of WD40 when machining and tapping is required and any advice would be useful.

Any advice on this build gratefully received...........

Jasonb:
Would have been cheaper to throw away the supplied fixings and use BA to make proper studs rather than use slotted screws. Other parts there will be ME or BA to suit.

A can of Paraffin from the petrol station or garden ctr will work out a lot cheaper than WD40

Sanjay F:
Interesting, so far I have only ordered a 2-56 tap so I can still switch to BA which would be a lot easier all round. So is what you're suggesting that I just measure the diameter of the fixtures and use the nearest BA size?

Jasonb:
Have a look at the attached, it is what I made up and refer to when making US design engines. Though these days I'm more inclined towards metric the BA option got used on quite a few hit & miss engines.

So just follow the colours across, for a #2-56 thread I would use 8BA

Michael S.:
I really like these bottle steam engines.
It will be interesting to see how the crankshaft bearings are made.
