Ford Model T engine in 1/4 scale
« on: October 25, 2025, 01:25:09 AM »
Just finished printing this Ford Model T engine and trans. The original stl files came from a fellow named Chuck Ridley on Grabcad. I started printing some of the parts then realized there were errors in the part modeling so I set about correcting everything from online information about the model T. After about 60 hours of redrawing, massaging and creating completely new parts I have what I think is a quite accurate 3D printed model T engine. Two of the parts, the oil pan and stand were too big for my Ender 3 Neo so I split them into two pieces and super glued them together. Being that I'm also a machinist I made shafts and pieces for parts that would be too small to be printed with any strength. The original stl files are drawn full size and this model is one quarter scale.
A few of the things that were completely remodeled were the block, the exhaust manifold, the carb heater baffle, the fan and bracket, the timing cover, the ignition timer, the 'Hogshead' or transmission housing, the head and various other small parts.

Very nice, George. So with all the details flushed out on the 3DP prototype, its smooth sailing to make the metal one now! :D

The transmission is a model in itself. I was thinking of making a 1/3 scale model of the back of the block and and an operating transmission. For those not familiar with a T transmission they were an early planetary gear set driving brakeable drums. You pushed the appropriate pedal, it would squeeze a band around a drum thereby stopping it's rotation and causing one of the other planetary drums to rotate. 2 forward speeds and 1 reverse with a brake drum. Quite the engineering project for its day.

Very cool project.
Following along with interest.

Seems like I saw a recent video of a modern racing transmission that uses planetary gears.
I will have to look for that.

Without pushing the boundaries, one never knows what can be achieved.

Very nice result from your refining of the information to reproduce an accurate engine model.  Just now, I'm reading a book about the Model T, by a British guy who crossed most of America driving a 1924 model, did the trip in 2017, and his interesting experiences in getting to grips with the transmission, and configuration of the T's controls ..  He had a lot to learn, quickly !   Dave
