STBEAM says thank you
« on: October 19, 2025, 06:43:37 PM »
I have been collecting and restoring Mamod engines since I was a child.  I have just bought my first Stuart Turner which is a beam engine.  It is in need of parts but came without any documents etc to help me select the correct very expensive fixtures and fittings.  Any assistance would be welcomed, if I can contribute I will to the extent of my limited knwoeldge and experience.

Welcome to the Forum

Steam is not my speciality however there are plenty of members who can help you with your beam engine.
Best regards

Welcome to the group! Should be people here who can help you out with the engine. Can you post some pictures of what you have?

Welcome

You do not say where you are. Stuart (now without the Turner) is still very much in business and will happily supply replacement castings, drawings etc. Their web site is https://www.stuartmodels.com/

I think you should first buy the drawings which will set you back by about £27 in the UK. With these you can start to understand what you have got.

Pictures are always appreciated.

Thank you all for the welcome.  I am in the UK, Stuarts offer of £5.50 for posting based on weight the £22 set of drawings seemed a bit steep.   See pics requested below / attached. There is a stamed / cast mark of 80063 across the base behind the steam chest.    Is it possible to thank / acknowledge a post on here?

You had mention it was in need of parts, but it looks c9mplete, other than a fitting to attach an air or steam line.

That is a great looking engine.
Any idea about which parts you may need ?

@crueby @CI, thank you, it is a lovely runner on air, yes I need the connection for both a steam line and exhaust, I would like an in line oiler, a small pressure gauge c/w Tee piece and I ask the question do I need the steam cocks where the two plugs are shown on the cylinder?  Any dimmensions of these fittings and possible supliers would be welcomed.  Does the number indicate a possible age or just a part number?   My guess from the Dymo label is that it might be a school / college aid to learning.
Can I give thanks / acknowledgeent on this site??

@crueby  I am in the UK and can buy from Stuarts, however without drawings / advice I do not know which parts to pick from the lists.  They have not been overly helpful "check our website"   Are all Stuart engines built the same re thread sizes TPI etc?  If anyone has info I would be grateful.   Do I just pay their prices?  Are there any alternatives?  Advice is welcomed.

Drawings:
Postage will be based on envelope size.
Drawings get lost or eaten by mice in the workshop. Therefore firms know that they frequently need to be replaced. They are valuable and should be copied, scanned, for your own use (think copyright) as soon as receiving them. Once on the computer put the originals somewhere safe, not in the workshop.

If you live at all close to Bridport you could try collecting the drawings from the foundry. It will not be cheaper than the postage but could be a good day out even in winter.
There is no such thing as a stupid question.

Hello ST, how you go about completing this essentially already working beam engine does depend somewhat on whether you have some workshop engineering facility , a lathe, taps and dies, etc., to give options on what might be possible.
The drain cocks for the cylinder would just be the smallest size of cocks that Stuart supply, but you need to know whether the cylinder has presently been tapped at the thread size to receive them, or has been threaded differently for the present small bolts.
As the engine is complete , I wouldn't have thought that the drawings were an essential for you, and any specific requests for a bit of guidance on thread sizes and odd dimensions or queries will almost certainly bring a helpful response from Forum members.
Dismantling , cleaning and perhaps repainting seems to be the main jobs that would further enhance this appealing engine. Dave

@chips thank you. I was  hoping for info on what the threads "should be" for the steam supply and exhaust connections according to the design drawings.  Then I can select the correct parts from the Stuart site or perhaps buy them 2nd hand from elsewhere.  The engine looks very well made and I am pretty sure the threads etc conform to design as opposed to what ever was at hand in term so drills / taps etc.   If the cocks are the smallest then I can select them, thank you, but as of writing I do not know the design size of the  connections to the steam chest.
I guess I am heading toward shelling out for the drawings.
I am not minded to dismantle and paint to make it pristine, I like the functional oily rag look.  It will not sit in a display cabinet, but bench ready and run.
Thank you again Don
