A Stuart Progress SH1 in a box
Sanjay F:
This box arrived today and it contains what I'm fairly sure is a Stuart SH1 progress engine from the early part of the 20th century. It is in the usual rusted and semi seized condition but the it was the plaque on the wooden base which was the mystery. After some scrubbing with washing up liquid and followed by some Bar Keepers Friend the writing started to appear. After taking pictures and getting others in the family with better eyesite to decipher it we think it reads as follows:
Presented to the Duchess of Cornwall offices by JA Harris
I was going to rip the wood from the engine and throw it away along with the box, but given the plaque it kind of needs keeping together with the little house where it's been stored for so many years!
For those who like and are interested in early Stuart engines it's a little bit smaller than a Stuart 10h. For now I'll stick some oil on it and in it and see if it'll gradually start to move and then it'll be put on the 'to do' shelf for a scrub, fully service and MOT ;D

The box looks to be lined with something interesting (eg a poster, magazine or book cover?) with an inner lining pasted over the top. If you could remove the latter you might find something that will help with a date for the box and maybe the engine. Just my archaeology brain kicking in there

You always find these beautiful engines! It looks like the model isn't missing a single part.

This engine took about week to take apart slowly without damaging anything, clean off the years' worth of gunk and about 30 mins to put back together! I'm convinced this engine has never been run, there is not the remotest sign of wear and tear on any of the components including the inside of the cylinder, just a buildup of rust and grime. I'm guessing it was presented in the box it came in and has lived there ever since.
I did change the woodwork as that was past its sell by date!
Here she is running and on very low pressure from the compressor.......
