The "Like" method of showing approval
springcrocus:
I know that this topic has been discussed many times in the past but wondered if now might be a suitable time to revisit the subject.
During the discussion surrounding Jim and his post about a ready-built machine from China, Jo made the comment that, because nobody had replied to his other, similar posts that they were of little interest to members and should be placed in a more suitable category of, even, alternative forum. Mike then commented that view numbers appeared to be high, which might be considered a seal of approval, until Jo pointed out that view numbers have become meaningless because of bots drastically skewing the numbers. This was followed by Dave's comment,"Aw shoot, and I thought that people actually liked my projects." which highlights the situation nicely.
Although we all enjoy our hobby in our own way, many choose to share that interest by writing up their projects and the only way that those people can be aware that their efforts are worthwhile is through the complimentary comments of members. Some, however, have noted that the ratio of informative post to back-slapping comment is rather low and it does appear that their is rather more popcorn eaten here than at a drive-in movie. Not everybody is in favour of this "cluttering up" of interesting threads.
My two-fold question to the administrators is...
Would you be able to exclude the "bot" visits from a thread's viewcount or, if this is not possible, consider introducing a "like" button instead?
Regards, Steve
Jo:
No
Jo:
Like buttons cause resentment and discourage engagement.
If you like something tell the poster, what you like and why. Engage in the thread, ask questions to show your interest, so please more than just "Cool :) "

I agree Jo. I know there are many levels of interest in the hobby but if you see a thread that catches your eye and you spend the time to read it, leave a comment. It only takes less than one minute to type out a quick response.
Minh Thanh:
Views of a post do not reflect people's interest.
For example in a topic:
The first post will have a few thousand members viewing it (current forum members are 7546)
The second post in that topic will also have a few thousand members viewing it
And so on
.......
Because most members will view "New Post" - and just 5000 members regularly visit the forum, there will be at least 2500 viewing that new post
And so on for each new post in that topic.
There is a stupid thing that someone is proud of when a post - a post that is not related to the purpose of the forum and not related to model engine of his has more than 10 thousand viewers with dozens of his posts and only 2, 3 members participating , even no one
