new from Rochester, NY USA
« on: September 13, 2025, 06:41:34 PM »
Hello - new to the forum. Have always been interested in model engines. Retired mechanical engineer but always hands-on otherwise. Jack of all trades, master of none as the saying goes. Metalworking and machining have always been an interest. Bought a small Craftsman 101 lathe 25 yrs ago with intent to start on model engines -just getting to it now. Have small benchtop mill. Did engineering apprenticeship at Gleason Works that included a lot of time in the shop. Amateur radio and electronics have taken some time. Help out at Antique Wireless Association Communications Technolgies Museum where much of the old gear is more mechanical than electronic.

Welcome Steve-

Glad to have you here.

Pat J.

Edit:
I had a professor one time who gave out the following advice (they were referencing term papers, but it applies to model engines too).
Professor asking the class:  "Do you know the best way to finish a project ?...............To  S T A R T  the project."

ie: you have to start an engine build in order to finish it.

Without pushing the boundaries, one never knows what can be achieved.

Welcome Steve!  I am also in Rochester, west side in the town of North Chili. I was at Kodak for 30 years, never got a chance to see the inside of Gleason Works but drove past often.

Chili here - not far from Davis Park. Small world. Worked at Gleason from 1969 to 1981 then to Kodak until 2001 then consulting. Retired in 2016. Have some kits I'll tell you about when I get a few minutes. 9 year old granddaughter with us for the weekend. She's busy in the shop 3D printing stuff for halloween costume so I have a few minute break.

Small world indeed, I go past Davis Park on the way to some of the stores over there.

I have several kits -a Stuart kit, a PM Reseach kit and what appears to be a partial kit of castings for a 1/3 scale Julien 5 hp. Probably go off on my own first. Need finish working on an Arco 2-1/2 GH hit and miss engine for the historical society where I grew up (near Niagara Falls, NY).
