Engines > Restoration of Model Engines
Old Stuart S50
Sanjay F:
Another restoration as I wait for parts for my new build
This time a crusty ole Stuart S50 which is slightly unusual as the valve chest and cylinder are a single part - I believe this is how they were originally made?
This is very rusty and missing the eccentric rod and the bit that connecting it to the valve rod - can someone help me out with the dimensions of those bits please? From what I have seen the eccentric rod has a point at one end which locates through the strap into the sheave stopping it from slipping off?
Here's some pics of the fine old S50 ripe for restoration

Rusty, but a nice looking engine overall. That one-piece steam chest was used on a lot of full sized engines, but fell out of favor for models since it is very hard to get a good finish on the valve face down inside the chest. How many more of these old engines are waiting in the wings? Neat engines!

Here you go, just check to see if yours is BA or 3/32" whit
If you change the last number in the url you can get all parts of the build and associated drawings

Oh briliant thank you ..... that's handy having the build as there are bound to be some other bits 'n' bobs. Good point I'll check the thread before diving in
I made a new cross head guide rail and supports as one was missing, and machined the crankpin as it was scraping against the soleplate; seems to be running smoothly now. This is so pitted it must have been somewhere very damp for an extended period of time......adds to the character I guess! ;D

I wondered why they changed it to a separate valve chest, that makes sense now.
I have a backlog of engines which built up in 2024 when my house and workshop were being refurb'd; I got a little trigger happy on auctions out of boredom ;)
