The HG Wells Engine
Sanjay F:
Well I'm sure that got your attention, but any similarity to anyone living or dead is purely coincidental ;)
This is the other engine which came in box from an auction named 'steam stuff'. I'm not sure who the HG emblazoned on the front was, but I'm fairly certain it isn't the illustrious Herbert George Wells.
I have had partially seized engines before but this was solid, not even a minor bit of movement. I discovered the valve was stuck so freed that up, but still no joy, then discovered the eccentric was jammed, then the piston and went on and on and on until the entire engine was completely dismantled. The crosshead would not budge in the guide and needed some of my 'focussed and controlled violence' with a plastic hammer to get it to move......not great
What was locking up the engine was a hardened brown substance which looked like oil but had turned into a crystallised translucent solid (see photo of eccentric).
Its taken a week of soaking in thinners, liquid wrench, scrapping with wire wool to remove it; I've never seen anything like it.
I finally got it all off I put it back together and this engine has some serious umph and you can feel the compression.......I expect Jeremy Clarkson to appear and tell us how many Nm of torque it has! You can hear it in the video and watch the exhaust port you can see what is presumably a mix of air vapourised oil puffing out.
Anyone know or seen a manufacturer called 'HG' before?

HG to me would suggest Henry Greenly but I don't think he sold engines under his own name.
Nice save as ever :praise2: :praise2:
Dave Otto:
There you go tempting Jason again. :lolb: Where do you find all these little unloved engines?
Dave
Michael S.:
A beautiful engine! What's the cylinder bore and stroke?
Many parts you can make yourself without castings.
Michael
Jasonb:
It sounds purposeful.
Not much there that looks to have been made with castings so fairly easy to replicate. Just the Sole plate and cylinder, rest all looks to have been machined.
