Engines > Restoration of Model Engines
A beaten up old vertical engine
Sanjay F:
For sale, vertical engine in excellent condition, one lady owner ;D
It's not in excellent condition or for sale as I have just acquired it and even by my standard it needs a few bits and things sorting:
- Flywheel missing (I think it would have had a marine type?)
- Conrod missing
- Bent crankshaft
- Valve chest missing
- Cylinder top cover missing
Aside from that it's perfect.
There was mention of it being a Taylor Hemmens engine, but I don't know who or what they are; when I Google it I get Maxwell and John Hemmens as well, must have all been related and producing engine castings at some point in the past?
I'm not going to be tackling this one for sometime as its not a quick turnaround, but if anyone has a picture of one of these or some details that would be great for when I get stuck into the restoration. I'd like to get in as near to what it should look like as possible........

Crickey Sanjay, there is some real antiquity about this latest find for possible restoration. I wonder if checking the paintings on the walls of tombs inside the Pyramids might be the best place to begin the search for some original drawings! But it will be interesting to see whether the source of the castings or the manufacture can be tracked down. Dave
Jasonb:
Maxwell Hemmenes was the company name owned by John Maxwell Hemmenes so those two are very related. I'm not sure if he was previously one half of Taylor Maxwell but some of the traction engines MH sold were previously sold under the brand name Michael Holden.
The Maxwell Hemmenes catalogue that I have does not show that engine but it is from the 80s, yours looks like it could be quite a bit earlier than that.
One careful owner ...........................................and several others who mucked it up
Found this Taylor Hemmens engine, similar but not what you have though they may have made more than one

Charles Lamont:
Does that cylinder even belong on that standard?
Sanjay F:
Thanks everyone for the info - the engine which Jason found looks amazing (see below), it looks like some sort of alien from a 1960's sci-fi movie!
The engine could be a bitsa, I don't know, but it definitely will be by the time I've finished with it; there was something about it which appealed to me other than it was cheap
I found some more intell on the various 'Hemmens' for those who are interested: https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/modelsteam/maxwell-hemmens-precision-steam-models-legend-t95425.html
