Holding angle in lathe chuck
« on: August 13, 2025, 10:26:33 am »
I was about to enjoy the tedium of filing eight edges square on four pieces of 1" brass angle (about 30mm long) when it occurred that I might be able to hold them for facing instead. They seem secure enough in both the three and four jaw chucks (the latter using only 3 jaws with the work mounted in a similar way to the 3 jaw).

Apart from the offset weight and the interrupted cut, does this look sensible?

For pieces that short and thick, seems like it should be fine for light facing cuts.. You'll  get a small bur on the trailing edges, but that will file off easily. If there is any variation in the thickness of the two legs of the stock, the four jaw would hold more securely.

Thanks Chris, I'll give it a very gentle try, it seems to be gripped well enough.

If you put an offcut of round bar on the inside of the angle, you will be nearer to a balanced cut and it will hold just as firmly.

Well that worked a treat! Put a piece of scrap in the angle, set the speed at about 1/3 max and took cuts of ~0.005". There was no detectable wobble and very little burr.
