Using aluminium car rims for casting.
« on: June 19, 2025, 01:41:43 AM »
I have two BMW aluminium car rims and did a test casting from it to see if it would fill up a very thin mold. So I made a video doing the test and it went well. Also three molds were made to see if venting wire making small vents in the sand would help fill up the mold. Another mold had no vents made with a vent wire to see if it would not fill up the mold. The third mold had vents made by a wire and a tall sprue to see if it helps to fill up the mold. This test showed me that vents and tall sprues are not needed to fill up a sand mold.

Mike Coles (who is a member on here) always used Cast Ali wheels as a source of material for all of his castings. I have a few of his Anzanis and Scorpion castings.

I can confirm they are very good and machine nicely.

I have never had a failed casting using rims but it is another story using other scrap.

i have heard storys from an australian model engine legend ( gordon Burford) that he used old Honda Motorcycle forks for his Crankcase castings. sounds plausible to me

from foundry classes  we were told if you want to do sand castings young scrap uses metal that was originally a sand casting
then it is a metal suitable for sand casting.
