Guildford 2025
« on: July 06, 2025, 07:36:14 AM »
Another year, another GMES Steam Gala. Mike Coles and I attended and set up our stand:

I brought along a selection of models that could cope with the forecast rain,

Mike brought his big aero engines to run and a Perkins Hit and miss that he had just finished:

It did not take Mike long before his itch to run the Bentley took over:

Clamping down to the workmate, with the horse tether line securing it to prevent it tipping over:

We had not taken note of the birthday party group setting up behind our running cage  :ShakeHead: But later I began to regret talking Mike out of turning his engine so it would spray oil all over them give them a pleasant draft:

And of course the Bentley fired up first time.

More pics to come in a couple of hours as I have Bluechip just arrived  :)

Thanks for the photos Jo, the weather looked quite useable after all, and a fine selection of varied models was presented.  Hope that they were well appreciated by attendees. Dave

And finally his Lordship's new casting set  :pinkelephant:

An orphaned score, complete with a full set of plumbing from Stuarts. There are a number of "features" on this model that will need sorting out, including a machined valve whose pocket goes all the way through  ::)

Thanks both for putting on the display. Just wish I had not stopped to talk with Fred as I might have got to those castings first.

I did take a quick Video of Mike's very nicely made Perkins. It was running a lot better before I came over to the stand - long coasting time between hits and they were just a single hit as well.

A fine display of model engines again this year. Sorry not to have been there, maybe next year. This year was the first time since 2002 that I have not been there to exhibit an engine.   :embarassed:

You were greatly missed Mike. I can confirm the catering was awful and none of us appreciated the birthday group who took residence next to us stripping naked one of the 5 year old boys and sitting him on a potty in the middle of the field for all to watch, after which his parents proudly showed the parents of the other birthday party attendees what he had done  :facepalm2: Suddenly I came to appreciate what the schools must be going through when they have children not "school ready" turning up  :toilet_claw:

As I suspected the Score has a number of special features including that the sole plate had been broken into two pieces and JB Welded back together  ::) Eccentrics are over bored, main bearing studs are not at the spacing on the drawings and have broken into the bearing bore  The good news is the crankshaft is straight

Looks really great, I was going to come on the Saturday, but read the model engines were there only on the Sunday - was that correct? I had a family event I had to attend on Sunday, which was a shame as I would have finally liked to have met some of you in person.......maybe next year.

That Score looks like it has a lot more issues than the one I finished earlier this year which was meant to be 'untouched'!  ::)

Thanks for the interesting pictures from the exhibition.

There are always steam engines on display that I've never seen before.

The combustion engines are also interesting.

Impressive display of engines, I didn't visit but from the pictures that looks like a most interesting event.
Well done to all involved!
Nick
