Emco Emcomat 7 with mill
« on: April 19, 2025, 10:10:59 AM »
Hi Chaps,

I have just upgraded from a Proxxon pd230 lathe with mill attachment, It is still very good and relevant to keep as making small super accurate parts is a must for me :)

The upgrade Emco 7 lathe with mill visually has the same form I’m used to and keeps space efficiently up well , I found that I would be over stressing the Proxxon lathe/mill for producing cylinders, Adjusting gears, Steel parting ect so the new machine hunt was on !

I am looking for advice here if anyone has experience with this set up , mill set up tips and lathe, One specific question is the best way to fit a four jaw as the spindle is threaded 39 x 4 so finding something seems tricky…..!

I will put a picture up to identify the machine

I had the very similar Emcomat8.6 but that had a flange mount with short tapered spigot.

If you have the change wheels with it then your best bet would be to machine and thread a backplate similar to what the 3-jaw is fitted with.

Worth joining the Emco user group as there are some useful items in the "files" section

Installed and ready to tinker !

Just had a quick go through to make sure all the gears work and electrical bits :)

It came with a very good quality quick change too post, imperial milling head (clarkson) which I need to source metric collets

The main lathe is metric so bonus points there !

Change gears were included

And a modified tail stock clamp to make it lever quick release…. Very handy

A quick update on the lathe  :)

Pretty much as expected everything that could be adjusted needed serious attention!

All gibs, all backlash adjustments, chuck concentric issues, loose belt , little bit of rust here and there !

All manageable and mostly complete now except the chuck…..

It’s a very nice Bernerd grip true which has 3 tapered cross bolts which interact with the alignment between the chuck and backplate, The idea is to have the backplate to chuck bolts slightly loose and then clock in a precision bar close to the chuck using the 3 taper bolts , Unfortunately access to the back plate bolts is ok but the second set ( let’s call them slip set) Haven’t had access holes through the back plate to tighten when happy, de mounting the chuck to do this looses all the Accuracy gained!

So all it’s life the bolts were loose, Plus one back plate to chuck bolt missing so the whole thing is all over the place ! Zero rigidity especially with longer stock…

The plan here is to add the missing bolt, attempt clocking in to as good as the spindle ( 0.005mm)
And if it’s successful I will transfer the clearance holes to allow tightening when all is mounted :)

Should be salvageable

If not I will replace the chuck for something more convenient and accept a little more runout
