Bore gages
« on: April 22, 2025, 09:21:57 PM »
Just picked up 2 sets of bore gages.     One 0.4" to 0.7" and the other 1 to 1.75   Both to "tenths"    In addition to the bore tri mike that sits in the middle of the range for the bores on the 917....I think I have the measurement part sorted out.  Can't make what you can't measure right?

It's a start....bought used off the bay after some searching....got a great price on them!

Nice!  Very handy tools - I got a more modern cheap version a while back, looks like same mechanism and sets of accessory fittings, though yours looks like a nicer set. Perfect for both measuring the bore as well as checking it to be parallel.

Hello Dave,

Nice, you had a good win there. Did you get or have you got the calibration rings which allow you to make absolute measurements.

I have a nice Mitutoyo three point but no calibration ring (yet). So for now, it is used for comparative measurements only.

Working on those now.....15mm and 32 mm are high on the list....thow both can be set to a micrometer for comparative work   I have a .846 ( 21.5mm) one already...amazingly

Lovely devices, should work a treat.  We have a 3/4" range hole mic (Mitutoyo 3-pt) that is lovely for one of our more precision bits of valve trim here at work, but the price of those makes me swallow hard every time I pick it up.

I have a tri mike but with a much more narrower range, and even used they're expensive!    But It's NICCCCCCCCE!!!!!    I bought this one about 3 years ago for measuring the bores on the 917 build, with a ring gage to match.

Picked up this Blade mike for piston ring grooves specifically....it's got a touch of light rust here and there, but that will clean up.

Expensive Toys Tools - Always nice to have  ;D

Regarding calibration - I remember our Physics Teacher telling a story about Swedish Gauge Blocks and Ford Motor Company.
Ford bought yet a good amount of Gauge Blocks (for a new department) and they complained that they where NOT to Specs.
So the Manufactor got them back and did a Thorough Inspection and they where much better than promised => back to Ford.
Ford Inspected them again and found the same errors as before => send them to Sweden again. Repeat repeat ....

So when Ford complained the third time - one of the Swedish Engineers suddenly got suspicious and asked what the temperature was in Fords new Laboratory ..??
Reply - a constant 25C ....
Aha - Please read the Spec-sheet or look at the Box : Calibrated and should be used @ 20C !!!!

I hope that your new Rings are good and accurate Dave  ;)

Per
