Brian Perkins - unfinished projects

(1/1)

jerry Perkins:
Hi. My late Father,  Brian Perkins, left a couple of unfinished projects. Members may be aware of these as Dad was an active member of this and other model communities.
The projects are the 1/4 scale Aquila engine which was the twin of that featured on the cover of the attached
Christies catalogue and the 1/3 scale model of the Mercedes W165 featured in Dads website.

We're looking to pass these on to a good home. Please let me know if you'd be interested in receiving more information.

Hi Jerry

Can't say that I've seen your father post here on this forum .... But he might have had a look on Mikes (Vixen) build :

Look @ second post down. He has also build a number of other amazing model Engines.

But he will have to chime in himself.

Best wishes

Hi Jerry,

Last time I saw your Dad was at the Bristol show in 2018. There are some pictures of our (ICEBG) engines on the stand here: https://www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php/topic,8301.msg180792.html#msg180792

We have a number of photos of his engines on the forum. Here are some more from 2015: https://www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php/topic,5211.msg99812/topicseen.html#msg99812

We still miss your Dad, he was always generous with sharing his knowledge and helping others make their own model engines.  :)

I never knew your dad, but looking through the pictures he was clearly a very talented engineer. The models definitely need to go somewhere where they can be appreciated and finished

Vixen:
Hello Jerry

I first met your Dad, Brian, 25/30 years ago. He had just started building the two 1/4 scale Aquila sleeve valve engines and I was about to start on my 1/4 scale poppet valve Bristol Mercury. Brian said " Why not build two at the same time, once you have the tooling and fixtures made, you may as well make a second part; it's only a little extra work. That's what I am going to do with the two Aquila's".

I fell for it, hook line and sinker and two Bristol Mercuries started to take shape. I soon realised the folly. Doing an extra crankshaft or crankcase was quite straightforward, but the second engine meant an additional 36 valves, valve guides and rocker gear. etc.

One of Brian's Aquila engines went on to win a much converted MEX Gold medal at Sundown and the Duke of Edinburgh Challenge Trophy (reserved for the cream of the cream) the next year. I believe a Spanish engine collector bought the first Aquila engine shortly afterward. As I understand it, the second engine was never completed (assembled), however the parts for the second Aquila are more or less complete.

Good luck with finding a good home for these two amazing projects.

Cheers

Mike
