Thin disc in an angle grinder for the long cuts then stitch drill the ends and finish by milling.

I would have not have bothered with the chain drilling and gone straight in with a slot drill. Two or three trips all round to get to depth, leaving about 0.010" on the sides for a full-depth climb cut to finish. I would pull out and reposition for feedscrew backlash at the 'wrong' end of each cut as I have no DRO.

Oh right - there are better options than the long route I took, good to know. I'll remember for that for future! In the meantime I've been attacking the woodwork and have again gone in with holes and mill, although given what has been discussed, a little OTT :D

The result is looking good though which is always a bonus .........right, finally time to continue assembling an engine!
Best regards

I decided to put off loctiting the crankshaft and crankpin to the web as it becomes very difficult to assemble/disassemble everything; I imagine I'm going to be doing this several times over the course of the next few days. So......I have drilled and tapped some holes for a pair of small grub screws as a temporary measure; will fix permanently at the end.

Now cutting lengths of 8BA threaded bar to make studs ........there are a lot of them and I'm glad I bought nuts which are 1 size smaller in OD (9BA) as there are some small spaces in which thery have to fit!

The day started off with unspeakabkle acts of violence against the eccentric rod to get it bent into shape!

In order to get an even port opening I had to file the inside of the valve chest, round the corners of the slide valve, reduce the thickness of the valve rod gland and reduce the collar on the crosshead.

Here is the result: https://youtube.com/shorts/NIqWrTHLlNc

The piston is in it's home and making a 'pistony' noise with a liberal dose of oil

Annoyingly, I've run out of 8BA threaded bar as the place I buy it from mistakenly sent 7BA so for now have ground to a bit of halt  :(

Now everything's fine.

There was little space in the upper part of the steam box.

I couldn't wait for supplies to arrive so blanked of the valve chest holes with gasket paper and look what happened! It's running on very little air  :cartwheel:

Thanks everyone, I can’t stress enough how it was a team effort over the last few months. I’ve learnt a great deal for future projects and enjoyed it very much

I’ll be dismantling it and giving it a lick of paint and reassembling it properly over the next little while
