Unknown Marine engine II
« on: March 31, 2025, 11:48:58 AM »
Hi all

I think I'm a bit hooked on these small marine engines!  :D

Again if someone can identifiy it for me that would be really great, this one does not require much attention. I find the points of interest:

- Inlet is split in 2 and a convex valve chest suggest its a piston valve (and the bobbing up/down of the part at the top  :))
- I have seen 4 columns and 3 columns but not 2?
- The columns are both structural and functional, holding up the cylinder and acting as the crosshead guides
- The flywheel is wrong, it must be 3 times the weight of the entire engine and is pulling it over! I think it should have a small marine flywheel rather than the large grooved one?

Here are a few pictures and a short video if you would like to take a look ......thank you!

Yes looks like a piston alve. It would probably also run if you put the air into the single hole on the other side.

I've made a couple of two column small marine engines, one of which also uses the columns as the guide.

Gamages NDC, this will run if I put air into the two "exhaust" holes or the central "inlet"

They look great and yes a 2 column support doubling up as guides. Also the flywheels definitely look more in keeping with these type of engines both style and size wise. I'm going to machine and install a new one and set it on a larger wooden plinth

BTW, what does Gamages NDC mean?

Gamages was a store selling steam engines (amongst other things) in London, wasn't it?

Never really worked out what the NDC stood for. It is used for some engines to abreviate "non dead centre" but it is not that.

The original flywheel has been 'trimmed' and put on a diet and I think is now much more in proportion with the engine - and it doesn't tip over!  :D

And here she is in full motion; since having had the flywheel 'trimmed' this engine is like a bucking bronco and had I trouble keeping her on the bench!
