Engines > From Kits/Castings
Well pump as a model.
Michael S.:
I should really use my free time to work on the ME Beam steam engine, but I think I'll get on with it in the fall.
There are a few aluminum castings on the shelf. I bought them at an exhibition in Austria, and I was fascinated by this pump.
So I started on it today. The piston is a standard 1/2-inch check valve. To prevent the brass piston from sliding too easily in the aluminum, I thought I'd use a thin brass tube from the sink drain. I only need to remove 1 mm in diameter from the check valve. I drilled the hole on the lathe so that the brass tube clamps easily in the aluminum. Using a freshly turned piece of beech wood, I clamped the cylinder upside down in the lathe chuck and machined the other side. It all worked quite well. The aluminum is very easy to machine.
Michael S.:
The foot valve has a brass ring. I think it's better this way.
The check valve can be easily held and worked on with a 1/2-inch sleeve.
All the parts are screwed together. O-rings are used as seals.
In any case, I made good use of the somewhat stormy and wet Sunday, and the beginning is made.

Now that's something quite different from the usual castings! Who makes the castings and it also makes me wonder what else to they make?
