Well pump as a model.
« on: March 30, 2025, 06:39:01 PM »
I should really use my free time to work on the ME Beam steam engine, but I think I'll get on with it in the fall.
There are a few aluminum castings on the shelf. I bought them at an exhibition in Austria, and I was fascinated by this pump.
So I started on it today. The piston is a standard 1/2-inch check valve. To prevent the brass piston from sliding too easily in the aluminum, I thought I'd use a thin brass tube from the sink drain. I only need to remove 1 mm in diameter from the check valve. I drilled the hole on the lathe so that the brass tube clamps easily in the aluminum. Using a freshly turned piece of beech wood, I clamped the cylinder upside down in the lathe chuck and machined the other side. It all worked quite well. The aluminum is very easy to machine.

The foot valve has a brass ring. I think it's better this way.
The check valve can be easily held and worked on with a 1/2-inch sleeve.
All the parts are screwed together. O-rings are used as seals.
In any case, I made good use of the somewhat stormy and wet Sunday, and the beginning is made.

Now that's something quite different from the usual castings! Who makes the castings and it also makes me wonder what else to they make?

I worked on the pump again today.
The pulley mount was made, as was the water basin and base.
The water basin is only attached to the base with two O-rings. I think that's okay.
The drive shaft is getting ball bearings.
That means almost all the cast parts have been processed.

I had time and was able to continue working on the pump. The hand lever is installed and connected to the piston.

I pumped myself a beer right away.

Michael, cheers 🍻

The connecting rod to the pulley is finished.

I think I'll paint it green.

That's looking great and moving great. What are you going to mount it on after painting it?

Hello Sanjay,

I built a box out of wood. Out of plywood, I don't know what it's called where you live. In hardware stores, the coated plywood is called "Siebdruckplatte."
Inside the box is a waterproof plastic container.

That's a great water pump. I like the magnetic latch approach on the base access panel. Very neat!

Hello Michael,

Nice work, a fine looking model hand pump. I am sure you could modify it to pump beer.   :DrinkPint:

I have not seen a hand pump with an external engine drive before; were they more common over on the continent?

Prost

That works Well :LittleDevil:

I have a hit and miss engine that was mainly used for driving similar pumps so when the engine is complete I will also make a pump. Very common to have engine driven pump jacks in the US.

One of the German suppliers now does what looks to be quite a nice casting set.

Thank you for the kind words.

I'm only familiar with the pumps Jason presented here.

The pump I built here isn't well-known in my area. Maybe it's just an idea from the manufacturer of the castings.

Excellent Michael, I really enjoyed the video - very nice way of showcasing an engine as well, having it drive the pump that way.
