Hello dear modellers,
I would like to show you in a loose sequence the tools and accessories that I have made in the last few years, inspired by the books of G.H.Thomas and by the company Hemingway Kits.

Let's start with the universal pillar tool. I have used the drawings from G.H. Thomas' book “Workshop Techniques”. The device was made without commercially available castings. The arms were milled out of grey cast iron rods. The table was made from a grey cast iron disc and tool steel. The column is made of tool steel. I screwed the base together from scraps from the scrap box. I used a Chinese-made 180 watt sewing machine motor to drive the drill. The drill chuck clamps up to approx. 4 mm.

Bruno,

I really like what you have done in building this. I have been considering getting the castings to build one, but you have encouraged me to get the book and consider doing what you have done.

Thank You for posting. I am looking forward to more postings about your other projects.

Very nice work indeed, Bruno. I always appreciate seeing examples of "castings" made directly from bar stock. Tends to inspire me!

Ron

I also made the UPT many years ago with all the attachments like you have.

It's a tool which is not only well designed and a pleasure to use, it is indispensable in my workshop and one of the most useful tools that I have. I don't use the staking part much to be honest.

Your version looks better finished than mine though !!!

Let's move on to the next device.
Versatile Dividing Head.
I got the castings and the drawings from Hemingway Kits. I converted all the dimensions to metric scale and adjusted them to suit.
I made several spindles.
One spindle after the design by G.H.Thomas.
Another spindle with an ER 25 collet chuck holder and a spindle with a holder for a small lathe chuck.
The lathe chuck was originally on a Bosch Combi lathe and has a diameter of 74 mm. I have modified it slightly to make assembly easier.

I was also able to use a rotating base from another Hemingway kits device (more on this later) for the versatile dividing head. All I had to do was add a bolt holder and additional mounting holes to the dividing head. The dividing head is then screwed onto the rotating base instead of its base plate. An aligned zero point allows precise degree adjustment.

Some more pictures of the dividing head.  The appliance is still in the first colour scheme. (RAL 6011).
Two years ago I changed the colour scheme.

The device is safely stored in a plastic box in a wooden moulding board.

The next device is from the book   "The Model Engineers Workshop Manual"   by G.H.Thomas.
This time the  ‘Workshop Bending Rolls’  device.
I have again adapted the dimensions to the metric system.
I have not used a comparative size of the specified gears, but gears in module pitch with 1.5 x module and 17 teeth. The centre distance is therefore 25.5 mm.

Good to see your examples of the Geo. H. Thomas tools, with their very complete accessories along with the basic tooling.  Making the several alternative spindles for the dividing head is a nice idea.  My Div. Hd has the multiple sleeve arrangement as originally described, which does work well for the usual bar stock sizes, and I made up a Myford type chuck adaptor which copes with other holding demands.
The 4" Myford chuck is a fairly large item to hold in this dividing head, so I also have an adaptor that takes the smaller three and four jaw chucks that I use with a Cowell bench top lathe.
I must admit that, having made the micro device that enables the set of dividing plates to be made  ( with the help of the GHT mini-drill ), I have never used the micro gadget again!, and hardly had occasion to use any of the plates, which involved a lot of work to make. A clock maker would find them invaluable ...  But the tool-making job of making the plates and parts was interesting at the time. The basic head and the main accessories I have used very frequently. I have already used the micro-adjustment a lot. Mainly to produce gears for which there was no part option with the device.

I made some of the gear wheels shown for my lathe in this way.

That's a very fine set of comprehensive gears : the unusual tooth count of many of them is just the sort of job that the micro attachment will cope with very well.  Some of the jobs for which I might have set up the head with the dividing plates in the past, holes around a pitch circle and so on, I might these days do using the DRO facility on the vertical mill.  Dave

#Dave
I work conventionally, without CAD, DRO and CAD. I never learnt that during my training and now I'm at an age where I don't want to learn it anymore.
The device is very useful for people like me.

I made the gears with 88 and 28 teeth to produce worm shafts with module pitches on my lathe.  The combination of both gears results almost exactly in Modul 1 = TT = 3.14159.......
88 divided by 28 = 3.14285........
You can get over this small pitch error with about 10 pitches per worm shaft.
My lathe has a lead screw with an inch pitch.

Another useful tool was inspired by G.H.Thomas.
I found an illustration in his book “The Model Engineers Workshop Manual” on page 38 Figure 3.10
An underlaid hair at one end shows a clear deviation.

I made the next tool twice. Once in the original size based on Hemingway's drawings. I made the second one enlarged by a factor of 1.5  .
It is a tool for making square and hexagonal holes.
The punch holder on the original part is Ø 8 mm.
The larger device has a punch holder of Ø 12 mm.
The broaching depth corresponds to 1.5 - 2 x spanner width.
The broaches were partly made from broken HSS tools, or pre-milled, hardened and tempered from 1.2210 silver steel. Then grinded to finished size.
