Emco Maximat 7

<< < (2/3) > >>

Alex:
My used-to-me Eco Compact 8, purchased in the early '90s, is my go-to lathe.

I did put a 3-phase motor and VFD on it, which I really like.

I do have a much larger lathe, which I now use only once or twice a year now. It's too big for a lot of what I do; the Compact 8 fits my needs perfectly.

Congrats!

Bear:
Thank you for all the responses  :).
Ruzzi, that electronic leadscrew looks like a good modification, maybe sometime in the future.
I plan on doing some turning today, now that I finally got it "leveled" (no twist in bed).
It was difficult to "level" with the milling attachment. Is that what they mean by the 3 point mounting method, the bolt hold down, 1 under the headstock, 1 under the tail stock end and the adjustment bolt on the mill base?

Dave Otto:
Looks like a pretty decent machine, congrats!

Dave

Krypto:
Congrats!  Looks like it's in excellent condition and with all the accessories (I guess the chucks are being cleaned?).  I see you even have the Emco dividing head which are supposed to be hard to find ($$$).

I d/l'ed the manual and was reading through it as I know nothing about these lathes but that they are supposed to be nice.  Usually a milling setup on a lathe is almost like having a 3rd nipple but this should be robust enough to do some work. You might want to carefully inspect that milling head as the one post I found online shown how it fell off onto the lathe bed while using.  I'm sure that was a bad day! The pics that were posted shown the casting suffered a crack which I would guess was from rough handling.

I'm sure this lathe will easily do the work you mentioned earlier and is far better than the other options posted.  When you dump more money into this lathe, perhaps with a DRO or ELS (great idea), you know that you have "good bones" in your existing setup and the improvements will be money well spent.

Bear:
Thanks Dave and Krypto.
Krypto, No chuck came with the lathe. However, there is a Bison 1 1/2-8 threaded backplate; however, it does not screw on. I read that the 1 1/2-8 spindle thread on the Emco may be a little different than say some other lathes with the same thread. Unfortunately, the dividing head does not have the dividing plate.
As to the milling head, I need to figure out how to get the end mill holder out so that I can use the MT 2 taper.
