Whats the red piece, a printed master?
Hi this is a piece of red plastic that was very easy to saw and file to shape for initial dimensions    I don't have any electronic devices for 3D printing and other items apart from the digitalcalipers and things

cheers

I have now milled one set of the expansion links but there was quite a lot of vibration on the mill when resolving the  part with  the lever ..so I shall file the others down to remove much more of the stock metal ...

I am now finishing the expansion parts and using the jig for drilling the 8BA holes for the 1/4 " spacers , and I need to make the steel Die block to get all the dimensions correct

Instead of this 2-tooth cutter, I’d suggest using 5-tooth cutters to reduce vibration, or inexpensive tungsten cutters with diamond-shaped teeth—they remove material at a good rate without causing the mill to vibrate.
I often use them with recycled metal of unknown composition!

Thanks for this  and I should have milled them by taking smaller downwards cuts on each pass, rather than milling the full depth all at once ??!!
cheers

All the parts are now coming together and the last expansion links were milled  with the cutter coming downwards whilst revolving the set up...and no vibration ?!!! so there' are about 200 parts including all the nuts and bolts etc etc

Hi Chris thanks and yes I do actually surprise myself with all these parts and I'm quite relieved that they have all been successful   I have been milling the die block parts and there are six of these to make and fit together...so more work to do to fit them all together...cheers

I have drilled the 1/8th holes in the slot using a jig  to centre it ...I have also sawn the steel to mill the top and bottom dimensions, but when I started to file it I decided to just file the whole lot rather than mill them to shape. the metal I am using is from the angle iron from am old fashioned bedstead   the metal is quite hard possibly high tensile to stop it bending and it really  rattles when drilling and filing ? I am also polishing it up as it is quite rough

Swords into ploughshares ...  old bed frames into triple expansion engines!   Re cycling in action!   A lot of work involved in these link assemblies, coming on well though. Dave

Thanks Dave and I shall do a spark test on that metal to determine is make up ...I have sawn off the die block parts and have used the jig to get the angles correct using a slot in the milling centre..  I have silver soldered the central axle on one part as per the instructions and will finish all the filing and polishing up.

Excellent fabrication using traditional methods  :praise2:  :praise2:  :wine1:

I have had fun in the past with angle iron from old bedsteads  ::) Some of it seems quite high carbon and work hardens. It also tends to crack after welding  :(
Best regards
