Hello Willy,
I'm glad that you want to work on model steam engines again.
An exciting project.

What is the origin of the casings? I almost bought a similar set from Reeves 2000 two years ago. Instead I got a brand new set of Stuart Marine Compound castings from a fellow model engineering society society. I am building this as my Saturday model between working on my major project. I must get down to doing a lot of workshop work when it gets warm. There is a lot to do! :old:

The castings were from a fellow model engineer here in Norwich and the HP cylinder castings was a bit rough after machining with a few blowholes etc .. but relatively cheap but I don't know where he got them from ??

Glad to see you back in the workshop Willy!

The IP and LP bores have been machined using my homemade boring head ..this has served me well over the past 50 odd years   in the old days we used to make a lot of our workshop kit ?! also the steam chest have been completed and the parts drilled and tapped to hold the cylinder block together .......

The valve rods have been made from silver steel and to make the thread cutting easier  I use a strong spring that preloads the die holders you just revolve it to cut the thread ...I have found that pushing the die holder as well as turning it is quite tricky. I also used the same method to cut the thread for the IP port transfer pipe in the cylinder block. This part of the cylinder head is at an angle, so to cut the thread after drilling the hole the tap is held in the chuck and a preload spring is inserted on the quill stop arrangement at the top ..also a special "spanner" was made to turn the tap ................

Hi all, these are the latest pics of the construction so far , the title is called the Bolton  Bertinat  Bailey engine because the original engine was designed by Bolton with an update serialised in the model engineer magazine by Bertinat and my name is Bailey.......... the engine cylinders and the steam chests have been made and bolted together and I have colour coded how the parts fit. So still a huge amount of work still to do ..........
