Prazi SD300 (Hobbymat) vs. Sherline Lathe
Bear:
I am looking at possibly buying a used Prazi SD300 (may be same as Hobbymat MD65). I am also thinking of a new Sherline. Is a comparison of the 2 like apples and oranges? The reason I ask is one weighs around 90lbs and the other about 30lbs. I have not seen either of the 2 lathes in person.
What I am looking for is whether the 2 lathes are equally capable of precision work, if I do my part. Which one would be more capable on somewhat larger steel projects. For example, turning an I.C. engine cylinder about 2.5" long by 1.5" diameter with fins, and with a bore of .875" (such as the Webster) with no taper, before lapping.
Jo:
Buy a Cowells :-X

Roger B:
I have a used MD65, purchased from the good lady above, it is certainly capable of producing the sizes and precision that you mention. My 4 stroke diesel has a bore of 25 mm ,1 inch, and a stroke of 40mm, 1 3/4 inch approx. It will acheive a compression of 30 bar plus, 450 psi.
AVTUR:
I agree with Jo since I own and use a Cowells.

One cannot have too many lathes :embarassed: but yes even I recognised that while I loved my Hobbymat once Mr Silky arrived I realised I was no longer using mine and I sold her on to Roger.
Chris will tell us all about how nice Sherlines are. They have a good reputation but they are not a Cowells :ShakeHead: My smallest lathe is a Cowells and my next size up lathe is Schoey (Schaublin 70) who I need to use more :-[ but before she arrived I already realised I did not need an in-between-ie lathe which might account for her lack of use :slap:

Edit: Just realised that my smallest lathe is a set of watchmaker's turns which are lovely but never used :toilet_claw:
