Side Lever Steam Engine
« on: December 29, 2024, 12:17:44 AM »
My Side Lever engine is complete and running!

The plans were in Home Shop Machinist magazine in 2008.

This was a more challenging build than I thought. It took me almost a year of spare time.

There are many small parts and the plans were in metric so I had to do a lot of converting (which is good to learn);)

Hope to see some of you at the Cabin Fever show in January.

Amazing, I just looked it up, I never realised how small it is; great job especially having to convert everything to Imperial
Best regards

An enchanting engine with an appealing shape to the side levers which I will put away in my mind for a future design. Would you be kind enough to pass on a few dimensions, e.g. bore, stroke, flywheel diameter, length and height. Home Shop Machinist is unknown to me, I presume a U.S. publication??? Congratulations on a beautiful job. Regards, Paul Gough.

Home Shop Machinist is a sister magazine to Live Steam from Village Press in the US. Here is a link to thier store with back issues from 2008

Thank you for your interest. I thought that this was an interesting design with lots of motion. The model is quite small with a 24mm bore and a 60mm flywheel.

The plans by Mogens Kilde are in Home Shop Machinist Magazine. I had to purchase the back issues from Ebay, as they were no longer available from the publisher (Village Press in the US)
July/August 2008
Sept/Oct 2008
Nov/Dec 2008

They were also published in Model Engineer #4394 (January 2011) through #4400 (exception #4398)

There are some free plans for a very similar engine here (in French I think)

An intriguing small engine that is very unusual, and is very nicely made.  Good to see it in action, lots to watch!  Dave

Great design and the engine is running great!

Are you going to display it at the Cabin Fever show?

Yes, I will be displaying both days.
We usually set up right across from the Little Loco's booth.
