Atom Minor Mk 3 ETW - commissioning

(1/1)

IanM:
Good day,

I wonder if anyone has some tips for getting an Atom Minor to run. To be more specific, I built one from a Hemingway kit and I am happy with the main elements of the build but I do not know if the induction cycle is as it should be - eg timing and crankcase pressure drop etc. The reason I am going down this rabbit is that I cannot get it to run and wish to confirm or exclude this item from my 'to check' list. I'd be happy to hear from any Atom builders so I could try to learn more about any problems they encountered or indeed what 'good' looks like.

Seasons greetings,

Ian Macafee

Zephyrin:
what are the problems?
compression issue, ignition, carburation, diagram timing...
I've built half a dozen of vintage"sparkie" 2 stroke engines, but not the atom minor, and some were not easy to start...

Timing worked for me:

What is the problem, does it:

Not Fire?

Fires but won't run?

Runs but stops after a short time?

As it is a port controlled engine the timing depends on the position of the ports being as in the drawing. A few basic checks:

Does it have 'bouncy' compression?

Have you eliminated air leaks in the crankcase?

If you hold a match or lighter in front of the exhaust while turning the engine do you get a flame and if so what colour?

If you turn the engine with the spark plug resting on the cylinder head do you see a strong spark as the piston approaches top dead centre?
