Faulty Materials
« on: December 19, 2024, 12:40:43 PM »
I have just taken delivery of four different sizes of flat steel strip from a well known supplier based in Milton Keynes UK.

One of them is 1/16 x 1/4 and "very" badly rusted all over on one side and will not clean up as it is pitted on the surface. All have some degree of rust on them.

Two of the imperial 1/16 and 1/8 thickness strips are not flat strip material but have been sheared from 1.5mm and 3mm sheet material so are well undersize on the thickness, they are also twisted and bent from being sheared.

I have contacted the vendor to express my dismay, and he responded by saying I should "feel jolly lucky" as the 1/16 x 1/4 is actually obsolete.
As for the distorted strips he told me to put them in a vice and get the twist out myself.
As for the rust he told me to use a scouring pad and then coat it with oil.

Does anyone else think I have been sent useless scrap or is it just me ?

Yes.

I have heard similar tales about this supplier. I recommend M-Machine of Darlington. 1/16"x 1/4" EN32B bright steel strip is in their catalogue (last year's).

I've  gotten some trimmed off larger sheets like that. Then learned to look for that on supplier sites, the good places tell you ahead of time if its cut like that.

I do not know who you may be referring to the only Company in Milton Keynes I recall off hand is Milton Keynes Metals who advertise in ME.

Whoever it is if their service is not up to scratch feel free to post pictures of what you don't like about their goods and name them. That way the rest of us know to avoid them.

It appears MK Metals are consistent if nothing else ....

Some 20 years ago I had some dissatisfaction with their attitude re: some M.S. angle I got from them.
Avoided them ever since.

That size flat is stocked by LSM.

Thanks for the heads up regarding the poor quality and bad attitude of MK Metals Ltd. In future, I will avoid them like the plague.

Looks like rust is a recurring theme if their Facebook photo's are anything to go by. !! :lolb:

I wish I had seen these before I ordered from them, it looks to be a right old dump of a place.

Looks bad. The wonky shelving says it all and looks like they've had to put brass in the 'BMS' section as it's the only thing that qualifies as bright

Thanks for posting the photos of this outfit : I thought , until I noticed the car number plates, that this was some long abandoned little scrapyard in a third world favela or shanty town ...    Good job that the guy who told the OP to sort it all out himself isn't running a supermarket chain ..!  "Mouldy bread, mate, can't you cut the bits of mould out! "  " Found a couple of flies in the bacon, that's extra meat you've got there!"   Dave

Hi
that looks like a second hand dealer  but you are lucky to have a supplier that will those sizes I don't know any one near hear that would supply
those materials the new steel  would not start until much larger sizes and then mainly black steel depending on where it comes from can be
of any quality  an often sizes available are limited.the scrap dealers often don't bother with the smaller sizes

EKP do some of the more obscure imperial sizes.  :)

But lets be honest sometimes you order imperial material from a reputable supplier and it is not unknown to be supplied metric  :cussing:

Well I had a bit of a result yesterday.

I originally bought the metal using Paypal, so I put a claim in through them for "Goods not as described"
They have fully refunded me including postage, and I do not have to send the rusty metal back.

I only buy from M-Machine, only once did I have a complaint, some 6mm flat black plate came in at 5.5mm, when I mentioned it a replacement was sent FOC, excellent customer service - and very nice people to deal with.

Chris

A PS: Why would you be proud to put those photos advertising your workplace on Facebook? It does indeed look like a tip/dump/scrapyard
