Glad the single point cutter is working out better for you, Kim. Quite the adventure, but you're getting there!

If you were to place a thin blank of brass or aluminum on the back side you'd avoid burrs.

I've had some issues with drawing the escape ratchet for the Strutt clock.  When I follow all the dimensions and drawing hints for the Solidworks part, the teeth don't look like Smith's photos and the clock itself.

And as a result the ratchet itself also looks wrong since it's derived from the teeth.

Seems these parts aren't so easy.

Thanks, everyone!

Kvom, that's a good suggestion.  I plan to put a thin disk behind the wheel blank.  Not only to help prevent the burrs, but to help provide some stiffness and help prevent the teeth from bending to the side.

Today I set out to try my latest plan and see if I could overcome that escape wheel that’s been giving me so much grief.  And I believe I succeeded!

Here’s a shot about 3/4 of the way through cutting teeth.  Note I’m going counterclockwise around the wheel, per my latest test, using my newest fly cutter with the new geometry that, in addition to having relief on all cutting sides, should form a tooth that actually fits in the available space (a mere detail, I know ).  Also, I have a 1/8” thick disk of carbon steel behind the 1/16” wide stainless steel wheel blank to provide additional support from the cutting forces, and a smaller one on the front side - figured there was no point in cutting teeth in that one too!   You can see that I marked my ‘first tooth’ on the wheel with a black Sharpie, so that after I cut the final space, I could carefully check for any misalignment on that tooth specifically, since it will be cut unsupported on either side.

The chips coming from the fly cutter look really good.  Nice thin long curls.  I think it’s cutting well.

And here’s the wheel right off the mill, still mounted on the mandrel.  You can see the marked tooth at the top and it looks very good to me.  I haven’t even cleaned up the wheel – still has burrs and chips all over it.  But it looks great!   ;D

Here’s a shot after some clean up (on the left), sitting next to my previous attempt (the one on the right).  It’s everything I’d hoped for! One side of each tooth is straight, and the other side is nicely curved, with no curling at the end like the first one had.  I could hardly be happier!  :pinkelephant: :cartwheel:

And here’s a family shot of all the gears I’ve made in this round.  There are two other ratchet wheels I made, not in this picture; one for the barrel and one for the fusse.  But they were small compared to all of these.

The next step will be to cross out all the wheels.

Thanks for sticking with me through all my learning adventures.

And there was much rejoicing!    :pinkelephant:    :whoohoo:

Those chips look totally proper, nice curls like off a wood plane.  Um, woodworking plane, not an airplane!   :noidea:

Looks like a very happy family shot of all the gears. And you can use some of the rejects as practice to work out the spoke cutting too!

Well done Kim, a very pleasing result.

You are not alone in your journey of learning, all of us who read your posts are learning too.

Thanks for taking the not inconsiderable time it takes to post it.

Hi Kim, The gears are splendid craftsmanship as is the rest of this build. Do you remember having some doubts as to whether this build qualified for this site. Well 93000 reads proves stored energy temporal progression indicators qualify as engines and I think Chris Budiselic (click spring) would approve.

As you are now an instrument maker perhaps you migh like to look at some of the ‘Scientific Instrument Society’ Bulletins. Wonderful devices, beautifully built, maybe one of the astrolabes might be tempting.

I would be interested to learn how you rate the experience of building this clock relative to the little Kozo.

Regards, Paul Gough.

I've always fancied making a clock.  Reading this thread perhaps makes me fancy it rather less!  I admire your persistence.
