Non-engine project
« on: October 04, 2024, 02:56:31 AM »
Hi all,
I have been working on this project which is a pedestal grinder I inherited from my father. The first photo is soon after I started cleaning it up. It only just fit in the sandblasting booth. It is mounted in the mill to improve the motor mounting.

One of the things I needed to do was to replace the wiring, it was quite tired. Thanks to Steve Huck I was able to rewire it in a more straightforward manner than my dad used. After rewiring it and mounting everything in place, painting it everything works as it should!

I have now moved it to my workshop. A few things are left to be sorted out. Some of the things I inherited was a number of grinding wheels including the 8 inch shown in the pictures. I will install one of the not so perfect 6 inch wheels, so the tool post will adjust at least near the wheel. It didn't come with any wheel guards, I looked on line but didn't find anything at all helpful, anyone have any leads for a guard? The casting is manufactured by General. I found photos of the same General pulley part of the setup but no mention of the guards.
Art
PS. this grinder is probably as old as I am! as all my memories of the garage include that grinder on the right hand side of the garage! Also this work was all done at work.

Art: A small suggestion for your safety... The wire from the switch box to the motor should be tucked up under the structure and retained by something like Adel clamps. If anything ever catches on the left wheel and gets tossed, it could yank that line hard enough to pull it apart, with the potential for live wires flopping around until you could hit the power switch.

Looking good. I'm trying to clear shop space to get a few of my machines cleaned up and back to operational.
