Thanks Jason,
Looks like it's used for maybe ribbon cable?? Or some type of other electrical connectors.

I think that design would be called a "Toggle Press"

The design suggests a limited travel with a high mechanical advantage - so some sort of riveting tool?

Hi All,

This is the press for fitting Insulation Displacement Connectors (IDC). IDC connectors terminate a large number of separate conductors all at once with no tedious striping of insulation. The cable is ribbon cable so the distance between conductors is well controlled, the connectors have a little piercing tooth on each pin and the action of the press is to push two parts of the connector together until they click at which point each conductor will be pierced and connected. Consequently the press travel is small but well know and so a high force over a small part of the travel is all that is needed (as this one delivers). There is specialized tooling per connector type that also sets the right distances, so little to set up. They were great when they first came inland I seem to remember them doing maybe up to 50 or 64 conductors at once.

All the best,

Martin

If there is one going then I can't see any reason it could not be put to use as a press for other things, it is really only the dies that make it suitable for connectors but it could be used for forming rivits etc. Stroke may not be enough if you want to drive a small keyway broach.
