Silly....  you don't need no stinkin' plug.  Turning the crank on the lathe that makes it go round and round is what apprentices were invented for.  You even get a wireless VFD with an apprentice.  All you need to do is yell FASTER, or SLOWER, to adjust the speed.

I experimented with just doing the second and third cuts on the small bevel gears, and that appears to work fine. I cut the first one normally, and after the first cut colored in the sides/bottom of the tooth gap with a marker, then made the other two cuts. The only marker left was just a tiny bit at the outer bottom of the gap, so for this size gear at least only two passes are really needed. The books mention this as a possibility, varies with the tooth count and size. So, did the rest of the set with just the two passes, and they came out fine. Well, except for one where I miscounted handwheel turns and ruined the gear. Made another blank and redid that one. With only two passes, the set of gears was completed 1/3 faster, nice trick.

So, I set the collection of gears out on the table to get a picture, and the shop elves ran in, celebrating, and yelling something about Christmas ornaments... I'm going to have to lock up the gears till the go on the model, and distract the elves with a cookie. Mmmm, cookie... Great idea!

So, about time to head out for a lunch with friends before the holiday. Next parts? With these gears all cut, I can start in on the gearbox that goes under the main frame.

Part of this morning was spent with the roofers, fixing a leak in the new roof where it joins with the old one - this time I got the owner/head-roofer to show up and oversee things directly rather than just dealing with the minions. That went much better, they redid flashing/etc, and hopefully its all fixed, since Monday or Tuesday the drywall starts!

Then back in the shop for some more playtime - starting in on the big gearbox that sits in/under the center of the main frame, taking a vertical shaft from the centerline of the cab down through some bevel gears and out through some spur gears to the front and back wheelsets. As a reminder, this is what its all going to look like:

To start, made up the upper block that holds the vertical shaft and the lower plates:

The notch at the top allows it to sit flush with the top of the I beams when inserted from underneath. There will be screws down through the top of the webs and into this block. I got lucky and found an offcut from another model that is nearly the perfect size for this block. Here is where it will sit in the frame - remember that the webs on the bottom of the frame were milled back to make room for this block.

Easiest way to bore a 1/2" hole through the center of the block was to chuck it in the large 4-jaw, centered up on the chuck, and drill/bore through for the vertical shaft:

A test fit of the shaft and the smaller bevel gear - this is one of the first pair cut, using a M1.75 cutter.

More shaping on the block, cut in rebates on the bottom sides to hold the lower plates:

Then cut the lower plates from some 3/4" thick bar, initial cuts on them after overall sizing was to cut matching rebates at the tops of each to fit the plates to the bottom of the first block. The spur gears will sit in the center gap:

Next will be a LOT of shaping on the lower plates to make them look like the cad drawing at the top of this post...

      Glad the foreman got the roof leak fixed. Fingers crossed that it is now watertight. Minions have their issues but I am told they are useful in some situations- you can jam them into leaky spots with a broom handle if need be. Wasn't one of the roofers called Abner Zorb-Bent?

Have fun with the gearbox housing drilling and carving!

The minion that came last time would have have filled a really big hole!   :lolb:   Is Abner the brother of Abby Normal of Young Frankenstein  fame?
So far no leaks. No rain, either!

Having fun with this gearbox, its one of those old ornate style designs.

Yeah, I love those ornate curvy parts! They look so cool and have some fun challenges to make them look right.  Too bad it's all going to be under the crane where nobody will see that great carving!

I hope the roof is properly fixed now
