Hi Chris, this is going to be a great engine collection room!
I'm just thinking about what problems it would create if I were to add a room to my house. Applications to the building authority and the number of building regulations have increased from 5,000 to 20,000 in the last 10 years. (That was in the newspaper recently)
I hope it's easier for you to change something in the house.

Michael

New shop Chris? Sorry - haven't been around so not familiar with any goings on.
More of a display room, though it will clear space in the shop which is a bit crowded with models!

The room is no where near property boundaries or setback limits, so the permit process was simple. Especially  since the contractor handled it all! He had his architect  do all the drawings and submitted them to the  town, granted in a few days. I did have to dig out the original  survey map of the house so they could see where the room would go. The town already had it supposedly,  but giving them the copy saved the week they would have needed to open the file drawer...

Well, I HAD thought that I wouldn't get much time for the shop today, since the framers would be here this morning to get the roof shell done and skinned before the storm hits around mid day (1/4 to 1/2" of rain possible). The contractor showed up himself, pretty p*ssed off, since the two framers backed out at the last minute. So, he (with a little help from me) got a tarp up and other bits covered to keep the water from running down in through where they had taken off the ridge vent to do the upper framing. The plan had been to get the last of the framing done and the panels on so the roofers could at least get the roofing felt/tarpaper rolls on to shed any rain. That plan is in the dumpster. The weather is supposed to be amazing the next couple days (after today - wet and cold) so they better be back tomorrow.

Anyway, that means I can set up outside under the garage overhang and get some soldering started, at least...

Got the first set of narrow bars for the angle iron soldered up, as well as the first set of bars for the I beams. They are in soaking in the vinegar now, so far things look good. As expected the small bars for the angle stock sagged a bit when hot, had the same thing happen on previous models but its not a problem since it is easy to straighten again and it will be cut into short (1-1/4" roughly) lengthes anyway. The I beam stock is a lot thicker, and stayed straight. The jigs worked out fine, three along the length worked well. I have the second set all jigged up and will solder them later this afternoon. When the angle stock is cleaned up I will set up the jigs from that for the second set of bars.

Pictures after bars are cleaned up...

Thanks Jeff!

Here is the first I beam blank after cleanup. The second one is in soaking still, as is the second length of angle iron. I need to weigh the propane tank, I might need a refill on it soon, the I beams soak up a lot of heat and it takes a while to move down the sides melting the solder. Didn't help that it was about 50F today.

The jigs are working well, they are in soaking as well to clean them up for the next set. I need to make six of the big I beam sections to get enough for the four longitudinal beams plus the herd of cross beams. Will take a couple days to get them all soldered up and ready for milling. While that it going on, I'll trim the big end plates down to size. There are two tall plates at the ends that the four long beams bolt to, the plates hold them plus the rail car couplers.

Not much shop time on the crane today, all I did was get the jigs set up on the next two sets of bars for the long I beams. Weighed the propane tank, and it was down to the last couple pounds, so I went for a refill on that, as well as getting more silver solder in (these beams take a lot, even just doing short segments of the wire spaced along the length). Also a great long lunch out with friends!

The framers were back this morning and got a lot done - they had to replace the one guy whose knee was getting real bad after wrenching it while out fishing a couple weeks ago (that fishing is a rough sport!) The new guy had worked with the other framer for decades, they made great progress. One side of the roof is framed in, decked over, and the eaves on. The other side got the short frames done where it wraps around the end of the kitchen, I think they will be done with the roof framing tomorrow, so the roofing crew can come in (I think this weekend?) and do the shingles. Very close to a weather tight shell, after that is siding, wiring, plumbing (moving the garden hoe valve out from the old to the new back wall), then drywall, paint, carpet. Lots of steps left!  Cant see it in this photo well, but the roof on the right side of the picture is the one farther along.

Where will the ticket booth be located?

With your collection of masterpieces and the sculptor/engineer/machinist/submariner himself on hand to give guided tours and technical expositions I think admission should start at about $25 a head, twice that for children under 12 years of age.

Of course, MEM charter members will have free admission as well as access to the VIP lounge and a 10% discount at the gift shop.
Regards, Marv

Thanks  CNR,  nothing further on the model today, did my 'shop' time putting the panels back where I  had to cut openings for the new collar ties in the old great room. They got the outer framing and panels up on the roof, tomorrow  will do the collar ties and supports on the new roof, panel in the window opening, and wrap the outside so the can put in the windows.

Too cold and windy for soldering outside today, tomorrow is looking calmer. I did cut down the stock for the angle braces at the ends of the I beams. Originally I was going to use the parts that I soldered up the other day for the angle stock, but it just looks too chunky. So, I found some lengths of aluminum angle that has thinner walls that looks better. Cut down lengths on the band saw and got them trimmed to consistent length on the mill. LOTS of them, looks like I will need only 138 of them - two either side of each joint at the end of every beam, and there are 10 sets of three cross beams plus the four lengthwise beams. It all adds up!! Going to be a swarfload of holes to drill...
