Crane's working fantastic Chris!  Glad the tests went so well, really fun to watch the motions. Bucket Bob looked a bit scared riding the boom but Lifting Larry was having a ball on the ACME weight! 

Was beautiful here yesterday, I was out in the sun in a T shirt, very warm, really enjoyed it. Today I had my coat scarf and hat on again, and it was freezing, with snow flurries hail and high winds. Oh and a huge flock of birds went by with a "We Love Rochester" banner streaming out behind. They left about a bushel of calling cards, and I had just washed the truck....

Sorry about the bird exhaust! Guess they liked the corn...

Got a start on the bars for the overhead gantry to hold the boom cables. Flat bars for the center sections, ends are larger and round, so I've milled some round bar to be silver soldered onto the flat bars.


The weather turned cold and we got an inch or so of snow (what happened to spring?) so I'm going to wait a day on the soldering. Instead, have started turning the ends for the hoist cable drum...

The first one, laying on the cross slide, has a wide groove for the brake band. The other is getting recessed to fit partly over the clutch drum. A smaller diameter bar will be used for the center section of the drum.

Great progress.
It's good to build on a larger scale, where you can still touch it yourself. Otherwise, it's just a perfect toy for workshop elves. They probably already have ideas about what they can do with it 😁.

Its much better weather today, so I will take the gantry parts outside to solder them this afternoon. In the meantime, more work on the winch drum. Got the two ends all finished/drilled, still need to make the bearing for the end away from the clutch.


Also got the center section turned/drilled,


The ends/center screw together through the ends, and the clutch cup screws to the one end. I also drilled for a screw to take the end of the hoist cable. So, I'll get the one bearing made/installed, then can reassemble it onto the gear frames. I did see that the brake band end of the drum interferes with one of the slew clutch crank arms, so the link arm for that needs to be shortened and the crank retimed so it all clears. The brake band itself will be rolled out of a length of flat tool steel bar.

Don, the brake band will just be tool steel, unless I get ambitious and  line it with Beech or Oak. It needs to be able to feather the load for lowering.


Oh, and looked at that one crank, I think I  can just change the angle to get it to clear, will see tomorrow.
