Full build threads

Jo:
I have just had a request for an area where people could post their own full build log without the usual chatter we find in our threads. So:

Is anyone interested in such an area?

Would you personally want to go to the effort to put such a long thread together?

Interestingly enough HMEM created such a section back in April. It did not get any use and has recently been removed.

I'll paste my comments about the HMEM one here as my feelings would be the same

I see Sheldon has added a new "Project Log " section to the forum but ask myself Why?

We Have the "Work in progress" section where build threads have been posted for years.

I have not seen any posts on here asking for such a forum, the only difference I can see is that other member can't post in someone else's thread. I think this is a great disadvantage as although someone could ask a question by starting a new thread elsewhere that is going to be less likely to happen than just being able to ask in a reply and be very hard to keep track of. It is also good to get the odd comment of encouragement to know your post is being read, again you will not get that. Take a thread like one of Brian's where 50% or maybe more of the content is not posted by him, the thread is not drifting off track but all the relevent comments and questions are in one place not in 30-40 different threads"

To answer your question about putting such a long thread together. Many of us do that anyway with our build logs. The only difference I can see is that it would be more of a one way blog and you would not have any questions or comments to reply to so potentially less to post.

There are regular requests for new topic areas on various forums and if created they soon seem to get very little use. Take MECH as an example, a couple of years ago people were asking for a separate CAD, CNC, etc section which was created. Now you are lucky to see one post every 6months in these new sections so no real point in having them as far as I see it. When ME changed I merged quite a few sections which had little activity not even from the people that originally asked for them.

Also will it stop the actual person who's thread it is from going off topic and posting about other models, tools and anything else that takes their fancy?

I prefer having the chatter/feedback in mine, get lots of help that way in addition to the conversation. My 2 cents.

I would think that some of the "chatter" might be useful feed back. A better way to do something or a mistake spotted before it gets too far along. Bob
