Borderer Cast iron scratch build
« on: September 03, 2024, 01:03:12 PM »
Hi Chaps,

The beginning of a new engine built from stock no casting

Of the Borderer design with 5/8 bore 5/8 stroke majority built from cast iron

Reversing gear too!

Pictures of parts as I make them !

Edit Jo: Please post the bits of your engine as you make them not only the copyrighted drawing.

No problem Jo,

Here’s the crankshaft sorted ;)

Gone for more traditional counter weights, Nice and true and spot on dimensions

Cheers!

Here’s the cylinder blank in cast iron

A fair bit of machining to do on this stock !

Here’s the cylinder blank ready to bore :)

I’ve got to wait on drills and reamers to do the next step!

Here’s the bed plate in Cast iron, Just in checking the crankshaft clearance I have noticed the same too close tolerance between the crank webs and the inside of the bed, not a big problem to create clearance but what I’ll do is lay the crankshaft tight so to speak and then only relieve what’s needed, maybe 0.5mm per d end would work ;)

I’m not going to raise the crankshaft line as I had previously done on the Gun metal Borderer I’m nearly finished on …..

Here’s the crankshaft being laid … All went well just a little adjustment on the middle bearing block height wise to get a smooth running shaft :)

Hopefully the drills and reamers arrive soon to make the bores

Here’s a little more done ✅

One con rod / big end made and fitted

I went with bright mild steel no plating, I think this engine will be a shelf Queen not fitted to a boat so I figured keeping everything oiled will be fine and look authentic,

There are a few bits to make from bronze which I’ll do soon after the cylinder block is done

You continue to make good progress Ricky

I know it's an early question - but what kind of finish do you have in mind - painted or ?

Per

Hi Cheers ;)

Yes it’s coming on well !

I think for this one a natural finish on the steel parts , I may nickel plate the brass/bronze then have a black lagging cover across the cylinders…. Probably no paint bar the red ring on the flywheel

Here’s the bottom end pretty much done ✅

I made 3 silver steel oil cups , rod and bearing and the collums

Temptation was there to take a picture with the cylinder perched on top !!

Not put a lot of time in today but here’s the flywheel sized up true and ready to paint ;)

It was a Stuart models one so a little smaller but should pass !
