How much does a Stuart Major weigh?
« on: August 27, 2024, 05:04:51 PM »
Prompted by posts about the weight of a Stuart Major engine in the thread about the Stationary Engine Magazine.

This afternoon I weighed my completed Stuart Major on bathroom scales. The result was 35kg or 77 pounds.

While I had help I weighed some other models,

Alyn Foundry Retlas = 35kg or 77 pounds.
Alyn Foundry Retlas Dynamo = 13kg or 28 pounds
Alyn Foundry Gardner 0 Type = 23kg or 50 pounds
Alyn Foundry Allman = 17kg or 37 pounds

Thanks for the update on the weight Andy!  My engine when all assembled will be on a bit less of a diet than I had been assuming, particularly as the plinth that I've made embraces the flywheel in a well, so is that bit more substantial. Looks like I had better begin having an extra Shredded Wheat with my breakfast.  But it will not make much difference, my Quorn grinder on its base weighs about 55 lbs, and I have to lift the motor and wheelhead assembly off separately in order to shift that around now and again in two "lumps". I decided against the Major on the grounds of their weight as other models have already proven rather too difficult to move  ::)

The alternative is original smaller version the M.E. Beam engine available from Reeves and currently discounted to £355  :pinkelephant:

Though I must say that the couple of hit & miss engines that I have built which used predominantly aluminium castings were quite "comfortable" to handle both while machining and then moving the finished engines about. I know the likes of Irish Dave had to move on some of his engines as they were becoming to much to handle so the lighter metals do have their advantages.

Plus you are unlikely to find any hard spots :stickpoke:

Now the question is Andy, how much did the swarf weigh from making those engines

A good question Jason, not very much so I can surreptitiously put ferrous swarf in our wheelie bin. I collect as much brass and copper as possible and periodically weigh it in at the local scrap dealer. :)
