« on: July 28, 2024, 11:30:37 PM »
The build of the two engines that make up the battleship Kearsarge rope winch and chain windlass for its anchors is now complete. Here are a set of photos and a video of it all running:

And a video of both engines in action:

Wonderful job, Chris! That is an amazing double engine there!  Quite fascinating to watch.  Just incredible.

Just curious, would they have ever run both engines at the same time? The anchor one and the other one too?  Or was it strictly a one or the other kind of thing?

Amazing job on yet another novel and unique engine, Chris!

Kim

Another very educational build on how some of the other Engines on board a ship works

Great result all around  :praise2:

One very small niggle - if the rest of the control-wheels are placed in the right heights for the Crew - did they need a Giant Elf to reach the two handles top left in the first picture  ;D

Thank you for taking us all along on another great adventure Chris  :whoohoo:

Hello Chris,

Through your hands (with the help of a lathe and milling machine) another technical work of art has been created. It impressively shows the mechanics of the Windlass in a ship. It's nice when everything moves.

Greetings Michael

Thanks  very much everyone!

Kim, very likely that both engines would be used together at times, since they were used to move the anchors on deck back and forth to the stowage positions  and the use positions. The rest of the time they would have been  used separately.

Per, the levers were high up since they extended outside the deckhouse walks and were controlled by a sailor-elf standing on deck. The deckhouse was sunk half into the deck for clearance under the main guns. The deck level was at the top of those frames outside the side wallm just below the pivot point of the levels, so the levers would have had the handles around waist height of a sailor on deck. The blueprints dont show exactly where the throttle valves were, so I made that part up. There must have been close communication between the  sailors on deck and the ones inside the deckhouse.

Thanks for the explanation Chris – makes a lot more sense when you know why

I wouldn't like work under deck and in bad weather not above either - but I'm sure that back in the day, the Ol'-timers where saying : 'These young Lads don't know how easy they got it - we had to haul those anchors up ourselves'  :old:

Very true!  On the pre-steam ships, lots of guys walking in circles pushing the bars sticking out of the capstan for a very long time to raise anchor. Then haul in the OTHER anchor sometimes!

Fascinating subject and great build! I always like to see the model engines performing work and seeing these specialized engines performing their duty is just awesome.
